Artillery is now ridiculously underpowered

The nerfs on artillery from the last patch have made it almost useless, to the point were it’s not even worth bothering with. Played an entire invasion game with a radio operator squad and got TWO artillery kills, this is just ridiculous. Meanwhile bomber planes still go rampaging and wipe out entire squads, tanks and bombers easily get 100+ kills while artillery, which historically was the main source of casualties for infantry, gets little to none.

The nerfs were too harsh, they have no “realism” backing & seem to have been largely implemented due to bad players (who didn’t take cover and just rushed with no tactics), crying because they were getting killed by artillery. To examine what exactly is wrong:

  • Only one artillery strike per team may now be active at any given time.

Now this change makes sense - the entire map being covered in red dots wasn’t a good thing. However now artillery kills a lot less people (and again, historically it was the MAIN cause of infantry casualties) & it makes no sense for teams to have 2 tanks & such but only 1 active artillery strike. Maybe expanding the limit of strikes to 2 per team would help alleviate that? Remember, artillery already had a default 4min cooldown, it was not like you could just freely spam it before the patch…

  • Artillery can no longer be activated during the first minute of the battle.

This is absolutely atrocious. The opening stages of a battle were the MAIN time artillery was called. If this was done to prevent players from getting wiped at spawn, just make sure their first spawn is outside artillery bounds… It’s not hard and it doesn’t screw the entire artillery play and its historicity.

  • The preparation time for initial artillery ranging shots has been increased by 5 seconds.
  • Artillery ranging shots now do less damage.

These degradations on the power of the strikes ended up being too harsh when combined with the other limitations. They are not necessary when you add all the other changes and only serve to make artillery ridiculously weak. They should ideally be removed.
What wasn’t changed?

How the bot AI in squads take cover from artillery. Properly designing this (and them taking cover from planes too) would fix almost all the issues people point with artillery without requiring most of the excessive and largely unhistorical nerfs that were implemented last patch.

Please consider this.

Even after the patch you can still get kills with arty no problem if you use it correctly. I myself would barely get any kills even before the patch bc I’m ass with deciding where to place my arty. But even I’m still getting a few kills with it with my shitty placement.

I’ll admit tho, the power of arty shouldn’t have been nerfed too much like it was. Would be good if the power was increased, but everything else stayed. As in the 1-minute timer at the beginning and the limit of only 1 person using arty at a time.

I think this should be increased to 2 like you said at the least, I sometimes have to wait quiet a long time before I can call in my arty and I’ve had quite a few times were all my radio guys are dead before I got to even call one strike in.

I actually like this change. People would either kill your stupid AI while running out of spawn or chain arty on the closest objectives to lock your team out of capping them. Both not very fun.

I have to agree with you on this too. The long delay and the reduced damage gives enemies way too much time to leave the area. I think a good compromise would be to get rid of the increased delay but keep the reduced damage of the ranging shots or the other way around depending on your personal opinion. But I think they would want at least one of these nerfs to stay.

its like i keep repeating over and over again but nobody listens… artillery was fine it didn’t need a nerf it just needed a simple ammo capacity shared by the entire team that slowly refills over time…

doesn’t eliminate artillery spam altogether but spamming it has the potential to put your team in a really shitty situation when you really need to call some artillery and the team is out of shells at the moment…

there should be a class of commander with a radio squad like Rising Storm that would be the only one capable of setting off artillery barrages. It used to be clearly abused but now it’s just become useless.

Artillery was good, but it was never that fucking good, your exaggerating plain and simple. Instead of nerfing the bf109 and artillery which was actually made to be better balanced, they should have massively overhauled the Ju88 and A20

I agree, making it a minute? Ok, making it unable to spawn right at the start? Ok, making you only able to have one?, ehhh.

But nerfing the damage so that it won’t even kill you if you stand in the middle of it? What the actual frick. These devs have no clue how to balance the game even if it was strapped to a brick that hit them in the head.

Machine guns were the most lethal weapon of the war.

MG42 had a 66% lethality rate.

Artillery claims the most casualties because anyone with a concussion or a tiny piece of shrapnel through the wrist is a casualty.

I have no idea what your talking about, however there is no way a nerf like this was justified, and if you actually understood English you would realize that was half of what I said. Artillery is a low priority issue right now, the spam isn’t as common, and now it doesn’t even do any damage, bombers like the A20 and Ju88 should have been more of a priority then a near non-issue.

are you fucking kidding me… the A20… that god dam thing has a fucking 2000LB bomb load it and its counterparts on the axis side are capable of dropping the biggest fucking shitstorms… if any plane needs an overhaul its the P-51C with its dinky little x2 100lb bombs… the fucking P-51C is cleared to hold loads of x2 250lb or x2 500lb bombs

Arty is excellent right now. Still feels like a threat, still gets me kills, if I place it right.
Still fun to use. Just don’t sit still and keep staring at the counter.
Maybe they could have nerfed it a little less (ranging shots doing less damage is weird) but really, games have never been more pleasant. Now we just need an overhaul for bombs…
I hear, the devs plan on making crouched and prone soldiers take less damage/be less likely to be hit by shrapnel. That sounds fantastic. And then maybe arty can get a little buff again.

Am I kidding you about what? Everyone knows the excessive bomb load of the A20 and Ju88 need to go, why the hell are you arguing to me about that. And the P51C is never going to get a bomb load buff like I think it should since the BF109 got nerfed to 4 50KG bombs.

Bruh no lmao, I’m not that huge of a sociopath lmao. Honestly for planes what I think they should do is have the current BF109 and P51C with their lame bombloads (or maybe even less) like they made them.
And instead of the A20 and JU88 give the Americans the A36 with its two 500 pounds bombs, and give a German equivalent with a similar bomb load (unfortunately though the Germans don’t really have a realistic counterpart tho besides the BF109 with 250KG).

Its easy, Radio squad is not as great as used to be but there is overall gameplay improvement with less explosions around. The game feel much better to play. There are dozen other squads to choose from, pick something new.

yea bomb loads got excessively large when the war really got going :neutral_face:

they had medium bomber planes with bomb loads of up to 4000lb
and light bombers realistically had a nominal load of 2000lb
heavy bombers were the ones with 8000lb+ bomb loads
