I wonder if we can change the current squad system to “create squads”
When creating squads the player choose what kind of squad they are creating, squad icon and custom squad name.

I think you misunderstood.
Squad upgrades and types would still be locked, like if I created a flamethrower squad, I could only make standard flamethrower squad upgrades, same as progression squads.
What players would actually do is create custom squad for an existing template, name the squad, choose squad icon, squad nationality.
NGL I would pay gold for premium squad icons and for setting default appearance of the squad.
The only potential downside is creating vehicle squads for spam, but vehicle spam is already possible with legacy squads so that issue will have to be addressed either way.

I think they would provide a bunch of preselected choices of names and insignia, but if not, it’s not like you can see them either way, nowhere it shows what particular squad someone is using outside of type, just like none can see custom soldier nicknames.

I wouldnt want to be able to create random … I would however like to see the ability to recruit additional squads or Companies within units so you can have more for say preset management.

Would be cool but might be a bit problematic for DF as people could just create 3 squads of tanker/pilot/attacker 3 for the best vehicles when those are supposed to be limited by the fact that only a single squad for exist that could use any of them.

I would love that. I’d pay gold to have a custom squad with a custom squad logo. It would be fun to also pick nationality or of what nation it comes from. I’d make a Romanian or Yugo squad.
