[Zombies] Zone 37

Arctic Circle

Zone 37 was constructed for a single purpose: to study an unknown source of energy buried beneath the compound. The source was first encountered by miners during a routine uranium survey — a glowing orb anomaly, silent and still, as if it had been waiting for someone or something…

When lead researcher Dr. Aleksander Voss and his team attempted to move it, the ground trembled. The earth cracked open, and lava surged to the surface, and a strange emission radiated outward from the orb itself. The entire compound and its crew were infected. Dr. Voss was declared missing shortly after. His location remains unknown to this day.

Your task is simple: uncover what happened at Zone 37, and send us that information. The transport we provided was one-way only. Getting home is your problem to solve.

Good luck.

Development history and more yapping

This is after a couple hours of map making - it’s no secret that this map was made from copying Nuketown assets and layout - and the lava river part was made afterwards as a path to the missile silo (which was completely removed in favour for new ideas)

If you played my other maps before, this place can look familiar.

The map used no custom content until later stages of development.

One of the new “inventions” on this map, is lava cracks. The bright lava coming out of the cracked earth illuminating the falling snow and the nearby area is something I wanted to get right for some time now.
On this image, the crack was way too large, and affected gameplay negatively. The final version, you can see on the trailer and images, are much better looking in my opinion.

Copy pasted Nuketown buildings and layout from my older, now obselete map. This was 2 months before release.

Initially, I was against expanding to the left area, and the player was supposed to reach the cave by following a path surrounded by cliffs and the forest. (can be seen on the minimap) This image was taken after trying out how AM sovmod_radar_antenna_b would look. And it looked great! Still, only as a scenery object at this point.

More AM assets. This is no longer scenery, but playable area. Initial idea was that players would send a signal using earth shield mechanics, and while that happens, a horde also spawns. → This is technically not very possible so a more simple approach was chosen instead.

Garages are cool. So I added them too.

Map from above, 1 month before release

The good looking ground cracks - aesthetic and functional - provides light source when the lamposts get inevitably destroyed during gameplay.

I came up with the idea of a globing orb not much later - along with the expansion of the familiar lava cave I copied from Nuketown. Enlisted has very little assets for fantasy or sci-fi scenarios, so I had to get creative: It’s two streetlamp lightbulbs together.

Ice cave without “interior”:

It was an idea I did not want to scrap - so it became a location for the first easter egg stage. Lack of proper ice assets made this cave difficult to design to look good.

Antenna station - with scrapped Transformator station - The transformator station was copied from Steel Plant and I expanded a little bit. But in my opinion, it was the most boring part of the map, so I replaced it with what we have currently.

But before that, I decided I want to expand the cave area once more, with the Laboratory:

Lab model in Blender - one of the first iterations.

Lab with WIP interior. I hate furnishing But the result speaks for itself. And yes, there is only lava where the player can see it. Obviously. I also put debris in one of the rooms and some fire to save time.

At last a couple days ago, the transformator station was replaced with this under construction thing:

2 floors, allows players to gain distance from zombies by jumping down a floor (never jump 2 floors), it also offers the perfect sniper position - if your allies cover your rear.

That’s it. If you made it this far, thank you for reading that wall of text. See you in the Zone!

This skins looks so fkn awesome! Like everything else in this mod. I can say for myself that I’m not a fan of zombie mods at all, but I will say that I absolutely want to try this one. And I think I’ll do it as soon as I get the chance.

Yes, I might look weird when I think of different gas mask wearers from other games.

I love how I basically planted a fork bomb in Zone 37 with the summoner boss’s minions - they just keep spawning
Hopefully its fixed and that old build of the map wont circulate

1.0.1:

This small update aims to fix zombies getting stuck in rocks around the antenna station. Furthermore, it fixes one exploit. Also fixed broken minion spawner zombie.

Knows bugs:

  • Broken minimap UI - The game’s draw_ui function is too primitive to handle the current map layout
  • Sometimes zombies get stuck over nothing. I am yet to find a proper fix, but this should happen rarely actually
  • Glitching snow; envi_cover is broken for some reason, between specific viewing angles. This also affects terrain patches around antenna station unfortunately.
