Development history and more yapping
This is after a couple hours of map making - it’s no secret that this map was made from copying Nuketown assets and layout - and the lava river part was made afterwards as a path to the missile silo (which was completely removed in favour for new ideas)
The map used no custom content until later stages of development.
One of the new “inventions” on this map, is lava cracks. The bright lava coming out of the cracked earth illuminating the falling snow and the nearby area is something I wanted to get right for some time now.
On this image, the crack was way too large, and affected gameplay negatively. The final version, you can see on the trailer and images, are much better looking in my opinion.
Initially, I was against expanding to the left area, and the player was supposed to reach the cave by following a path surrounded by cliffs and the forest. (can be seen on the minimap) This image was taken after trying out how AM sovmod_radar_antenna_b would look. And it looked great! Still, only as a scenery object at this point.
More AM assets. This is no longer scenery, but playable area. Initial idea was that players would send a signal using earth shield mechanics, and while that happens, a horde also spawns. → This is technically not very possible so a more simple approach was chosen instead.
Garages are cool. So I added them too.
Map from above, 1 month before release
The good looking ground cracks - aesthetic and functional - provides light source when the lamposts get inevitably destroyed during gameplay.
I came up with the idea of a globing orb not much later - along with the expansion of the familiar lava cave I copied from Nuketown. Enlisted has very little assets for fantasy or sci-fi scenarios, so I had to get creative: It’s two streetlamp lightbulbs together.
Ice cave without “interior”:
It was an idea I did not want to scrap - so it became a location for the first easter egg stage. Lack of proper ice assets made this cave difficult to design to look good.
Antenna station - with scrapped Transformator station - The transformator station was copied from Steel Plant and I expanded a little bit. But in my opinion, it was the most boring part of the map, so I replaced it with what we have currently.
But before that, I decided I want to expand the cave area once more, with the Laboratory:
Lab with WIP interior. I hate furnishing But the result speaks for itself. And yes, there is only lava where the player can see it. Obviously. I also put debris in one of the rooms and some fire to save time.
At last a couple days ago, the transformator station was replaced with this under construction thing:
2 floors, allows players to gain distance from zombies by jumping down a floor (never jump 2 floors), it also offers the perfect sniper position - if your allies cover your rear.
That’s it. If you made it this far, thank you for reading that wall of text. See you in the Zone!
