XBT2D-1 Dauntless II

The XBT2D-1 Dauntless II was an experimental aircraft designed by the aviation legend Ed Heinemann the project was quite simple the navy wanted a capable aircraft that could not only perform dive bombing but torpedo bombing as well and Heinemann delivered handily the aircraft was capable of carrying nearly 8,000 lbs of external ordinance which was quite a bit for a single engine aircraft in ww2 and i think it would make an amazing event vechile in enlisted

Lets go over some of the stats of the aircraft

XBT2D-1

Engine: Wright R-3350 24w duplex cyclone

Dimensions
Span: 50 ft
Length: 39.5 ft
Height: 12ft

Weights (Lbs)
Empty: 10,500
Design gross: 15,000
Overload: 16,700

Performance

Max speed: 325 Kph
Service ceiling: 26,000 Ft
Combat range: 1,350 n.m.

Armament

2x AN M2 20mm cannons 200 rounds per gun

Skyraider-proto-960_640

The next big question is armament which will most likely decide which BR this aircraft would be placed in since it was capable of carrying so much there is quite a bit to decide from but an actual photo of the Dauntless II performing weapons testing answers this question perfectly

BT2D_Skyraider

1x 1000 lb bomb
12x HVAR rockets
I would recommend taking the drop tanks off since they would serve no purpose in the game

Now in my own opinion i think this aircraft would fit comfortably somewhere in either BR 3 or BR 4 i dont see it being useful in BR 5 but id like to hear everyone’s opinion

Should this aircraft be added into the game

  • Yes

I am sorry but that kind of payload is way to much for anything lower than BR 5.
You end up just having a P 47 but better.
As for the airframe itself it certainly wouldnt be great but it certainly isnt terrible eighter with the twin 20mm meaning it wouldnt warrant as much of an BR reduction by itself.
If you use it as a one way attack plane you really can dish out a lot damage while avoiding most of its downsides.

The real question is whether or not it’s in War Thunder

It really isnt that big of a payload HVARs are eh not to mention this thing is slow and with only one bomb of you miss you gotta rearm unlike planes at br 3 already that have multiple bombs and therefore can either A insure they get a tank kill with more than one pass or B get multiple tank kills

Technically yes but really no

I think you’re underestimating how much damage a 1,000lbs bomb and 12 HVARs can do at BR3

We have things like the grizzly at br 3

It carries 2 more HVAR and the 500lb is replaced by an 1000lb…

First of how do you miss with an 1000lb? And secondly the HVAR even if no longer as busted as they once were are still very potent so just spamiing HVARs at BR 3-4 tanks would also get you some kills.
But the HVAR also work great against infantry aswell.

Which is busted for its BR and should be moved into BR 4 instead of beeing used as the new standart for BR 3.
Germany only has access to planes like the BF 110 with 2 250kgs and without an 75mm cannon so no the grizzly doesnt belong there.
Japan doesnt fair any better in BR 3 eighter.

Using the Xa-38 as an example of balancing is stupid. The Xa-38 should have been moved to BR4 ages ago and the fact it’s still BR3 is ridiculous

It really isnt though youve got to actually be a decent pilot to not immediately lose in a dogfight

So what? Its an attacker and not a fighter.
With the twin 20mm it is good enough to can contest a head on engagement and jump at pilots that are unawear which is about as much as most attacker can hope to accieve. An attacker will almost always lose to a dedicated fighter.

ok by that logic JU 188 can go to BR3 with reduction to 4 250kg which is slightly more than 4x500lb

It actually wouldn’t need a reduction cause it doesn’t have the 75mm that the Grizzly has

Well its the same aircraft:

I suggested it also in my Korean war topic. Its Korean War aircraft but the prototype was ready and tested during world war 2.

It has bad performance but its not BR III material its BR IV. BR III will be too much.

It isnt the same as the AD-2 it would be closer to the AD-1 if anything

They are very similar it simply cant be BR III with that payload and better performance then a Stuka or IL-2.

The first production variant of the Skyraider, the AD-1, was identical to the XBT2D-1 prototype; this was followed by the AD-2, featuring an upgraded Wright R-3350-26W engine with 2,700 hp

Well its not like super huge difference:

skyr
as you can see its still not BR III aircraft specially with that insane payload. If it has reduced payload it can be BR III.

1000 pound bomb and hvars is a reduced payload for the Dauntless II

it is but it dose not belong in BR III even with that reduced payload what other aircraft has such payload with that performance ?

Its better aircraft then :

This is BR III material here you are going with 4 cannons crazy amount of rockets and a huge bomb with almost the same speed … but 12 HVAR rockets is the biggest problem. If you reduce the HVARS to 6 or 8 maybe its possible to be BR III.
