Winchester Carbine 1879
The Army ordered 513 Hotchkiss First Model Rifles for infantry units stationed on the western frontier including Texas and [Fort Abraham Lincoln]in the Dakota Territory. Springfield subsequently modified 501 of these rifles to First Model and Second Model Carbines for testing by cavalry units. The Chinese Empire purchased 15,000 Winchester-Hotchkiss rifles in 1881. Many of these rifles were also used by the Boxers in the Boxer Rebellion.
Winchester Carbine 1883
One of these designs was the Winchester-Hotchkiss, which was made in three major iterations. Designed by Benjamin Hotchkiss and manufactured by the Winchester company, it was a bolt action design with a 5-round tube magazine located in the buttstock. As with most military rifles of its era, it was equipped with a magazine cutoff to allow the rifle to be fed single rounds while holding the 5 rounds in the magazine as an emergency reserve.

The Winchester Hotchkiss is a could have been a contender to the Lee Enfield. Like the Garand and Pedersen it was also a compromise to and older way of thinking. No general in history has ever rusted a soldier not to shoot his load in 5 seconds. Even before full auto vs semi auto three was manual vs semi auto. insane even before this was single shot vs magazines. yes a gun that had a cutoff to turn a magazine rifle into a single shot gun.

This cutoff switch is what produced the 1879 and 1883 models. the almost all wood model 1979 cutoff weakened the stock. the 1883 model fixed this by increasing the frame to include the cutoff. Both the calvary and the us navy considered these rifles. China bought thousands of its own. the rifle was bought in small numbers by several countries including Mexico. civilian sales were strong but not groundbreaking.
5/6 rounds tube fed to stripper clip sounds br0, but i think it can work. its a good alternative like the murata already in the game which was br2 but is now br1. a lever action tube fed gun crazy but i like the flavor of that. maybe a rare 12 man rifle squad locked to the hotchkiss. or wirth only one specalist or just locked to low levels and rifles br2 or less. an oops all infantry zerg rush to put boots on the capture points.
