No such thing as I “main” X or Y in this game. You should be able to “main” everything and use it during the proper scenario.
Yes, same goes for smoke grenades as people should use them more/properly.
Every since they brought smoke to all campaigns , I’ve been enjoying using it to cover our movements on maps.
It works well, and you will help the team immensely, though most players don’t see it that way sadly.
They need to give xp when you use it, and then that might help promote more team play.

many kills + lose = xp
less kills + win = xp

Because nobody plays tadio operator as a main squadron, radio man are reserved for being sub-class in other squadrons
