After playing Germany and the US for so long, I’ve grown a bit bored and feel like going back to playing the Soviet side. But then I think about how I’ve been flying the Il-2M for years. The Americans already have the XA-38 and the Spitfire IX, while the Soviets barely get anything new at all — it just feels stale.
That got me thinking about the Il-8, the one that’s at 3.7 BR in War Thunder. They’re both event vehicles, yet the gap is ridiculous.
The XA-38 packs a 75mm cannon, full coverage 12.7mm rear turret, an all-metal airframe, and can carry six 500-pound bombs. It’s incredibly powerful and stays perfectly balanced at BR3.
By comparison, the Il-8 only has a standard 23mm plus 7.62mm setup. Its rear turret doesn’t have full coverage, part of its airframe is wooden to save weight, and its total ordnance load is also lower than the XA-38.
I really don’t get why the Il-8 is stuck at BR4 while the XA-38 gets to stay at BR3.
That’s why I’m more and more convinced that as a rare event vehicle, the Il-8 really deserves to be moved down to BR3.

The event vehicle XA-38 is already at BR3, so why can’t the Il-8 join BR3?
The Il-8 is perfectly balanced for BR3 and should be moved down.
This is clear double standards, deliberately restricting Soviet vehicles from entering BR3.
Don’t move the Il-8 down; the XA-38 should also be raised to BR4.
This is no excuse for disrupting game balance. Just like in War Thunder, you can’t use Cold War vehicles to fight World War II vehicles; that’s utterly absurd.
Yeah. It might work. Germany’s Me410 already suffers from overrated battle rating.
They’re both vehicles that didn’t get properly balanced around the time of the Battle of Berlin.
Just like the old BR 4 M10 and Panzer IV H. Still, I think Germany’s best option is the BF 110 G-2 with four rocket pods. I really wish it could drop back to BR 3. Right now the version with only two 250kg bombs just doesn’t cut it.
Keep in mind the Il-10 is still stuck at BR 5, and it once had planned rocket armament options.
Yeah. I think both Soviet and German attack aircraft really need their battle ratings adjusted. Just look at Japan’s new fighters—they carry two 250kg bombs, and their torpedo bombers even have two 500kg ones. What reason do we have to hold ourselves back?
The IL -10 needs rockets and moved to BR IV but the IL-8 2x500 kg bombs is interesting option for BR IV. XA-38 should be moved to BR IV since really is not BR III plane. Considering the allies have the best prop in the game at BR II im not surprised at nothing when it comes to air bias in this game xD
I think it would be better to focus on creating more content to attract enough players to visit BR 4 and above in the Soviet Union rather than simply placing the Il-8 aircraft on BR 3.
Based on my own flight experience, the bomb-carrying capacity of the Il-8 is sufficient to make the enemy scream and cry in pain. In terms of balance, I don’t quite approve of moving it to BR 3. But for my own enjoyable gameplay, I warmly welcome moving it to BR 3.

Is it because its loadout at BR 2 is too weak, making the gap painfully obvious?
I think as a one-of-a-kind historically significant aircraft, its current placement is perfectly fine.
all props are missplaced now, you have doras and la7 at 5 just because they’re fast and soviet p40 with 2x250 and iar 81 with 250+50x2 at 2 just because they’re slower
Yeah, balance really does feel tough to get right. Then it suddenly hit me—take our Rank 5 and Rank 7 aircraft for example. In a meta where anti-air isn’t even mandatory, they’ve got such terrible payloads yet still sit at such high battle ratings.
Meanwhile, the Japanese Type 5 fighter at BR 2.3 has both excellent firepower and really good payload capacity.
Take the Spitfire IX right next to it too; while other countries around the same timeframe were already developing jet aircraft, Britain just went and made an even more overpowered upgraded version of the Spitfire. When it first came out, the forums blew up instantly. No one even argued about it being placed at BR 2, and people were even asking to upgrade its payload from 50-pound bombs all the way up to 100-pound ones.
It really feels like the forum crowd is straight-up biased against Soviet vehicles. When the US gets special treatment, everyone just acts like it’s no big deal, totally normal. It’s like the logic is: since the US got all these perks first, the Soviets can’t be allowed to get the same treatment.
Come to think of it, besides the 75mm SDKFZ, don’t the Germans barely have any decent event vehicles anyway?
I’d really love to see the Sturmtiger come to BR 4 someday.
Or have the 110 put back where it belongs at BR 3. The US just has way too many rocket options as it is.
Litteraly half the forum erupted in anger seing this plane at BR2. And I cannot blame them, this thinh is better than most BR3 fighters, mayber even B4 ones.
But I am biased toward it because it’s a Spitfire.
They do have fun ones. Like the 75mm puma and the Bison.
They also have good ones like the Bf 109 Z (that thing is overlooked because it is BR4, but it is still a really good plane, the 4 30mm guns are insane against infantry)
They also have really neat event squads.
But now, what does Japan even have ? There only event vehicles are a copy pasted Tiger and a copy pasted UC…
