To clarify, I’m only talking about the tracers used for small arms and infantry weapons, I know tracers were used for aircraft and other heavier equipment. I don’t know if tracers were widely used for rifles, pistols and sub machineguns, my best guess is that they weren’t. Apart from heavy machineguns, anti aircraft, and aircraft munitions, small arms tracers seem out of place IMO. So, what do you think about small arms tracers?
The British and the Americans had tracer rounds for their respective rifle caliber rounds before their respective entries into WW1, so by WW2 it should be common enough for all sides to be using tracers in their rifles. Dunno about SMGs and pistol caliber round weapons.
I know they used tracers in lmgs, but I’m not certain they used those in regular rifles…
Not only it would be pointless, tracers being used mainly to correct aim, use is null with bolt action or any non automatic rifles, but it would also give away positions easily…
Did they really use them in regular rifles?
No idea what the official doctrine was regarding distributing tracer rounds to infantry for any nation, but I know that some American infantry managed to acquire tracer rounds for Garands because of course they did.
Fair enough point
I admit it looks sharp when fired. Maybe it also caused a fear or suppression effect on those fired upon, too… I can’t speak much of it obviously, as Thank God, none have shot at me in real life (yet).
