To stop the one-sided steamrolling from happening the attacker or defender need secondary objective to handicap the defender or attacker.
I can’t think of anything else at the moment but anyone else is free to expand upon this idea if they got anything.

Basically modificated assault mode if I understand correctly.

devs did consider such an option.
but… yeah.
neither do they know.
as they tried to experiment with baloons. but it only favored the attackers.
as it’s difficult to think something that will be balanced for both attackers and defenders.
the idea would usually be for bridges or block paths that usually go straight for the point.
but… rally points kinda negate the whole thing.
perhaps do something like war thunder.
AA guns / convoy stantioned around the map for players to blow up / take advantage of.
in all honesty… that’s a long stretch though.
and at the end of the day, you can’t base the whole match around 2ndary objective that could potentially have more influence over the primary. not fun, nor balanced.
you should see Berlin assault rn. a curb stomp.
poor soviets don’t stand a chance.

Instead of balloons maybe a command center outside the map that the plane can go and destroy so planes have something to do instead of just flying around
was talking about this with someone a while back and one the ideas that floated around was to have a temporary bot extra reinforcement force show up in a random flank location to slow the attackers down somewhat by occupying them and keeping them busy for a while fighting that new force, buying some time for the defenders to prepare. This force could even include bot vehicles to make it interesting
but since the addition of paratroopers, that is largely irrelevant and won’t work as well because if the other team has enough paratroopers to overun the defenders and just avoid the reinforcing bot force, then it does nothing
the other idea is to have a grace period between objectives where it remains grey for a while, allowing the defenders time to prepare and setup without enemy soldiers being able to move in until the grace time expires and the grey zone disappears
but I hate the grey zone as it is, so no matter how it is implemented, I despise it just because grey zone ruins immersion for me to an extreme that is virtually intolerable
giving the defenders knowledge of the next objective and withholding it from the attackers is potential avenue, but the players catch on to where the defenders are running to and they adjust to that, but at least this is immersive and opens up teamwork/communication expansion in the game, which is always good
the downside to this is that whilst some players are preparing the next defensive objective, it means that there are less on the front lines, so some kind of balance mechanic would have to compensate, which is where perhaps some bot reinforcements forces could come into it

I brought this up in the past. Ultimately it comes down to being able to slow the pace of the game down, and when it comes to a “secondary objective” it needs to be something that LIKELY requires more than one person to do, and is reasonably counterable by the enemy team.
Look at airfield. The “shoot down balloons for extra attacker tickets” is extremely unbalanced. Why? Because it doesn’t even take a plane to do for the most part. An AA gun or even a tank can shoot them down with ease, making it basically impossible for defenders to counter. Simply making a “destroy this thing for more tickets” is NOT a good solution.
Now, from the conversation on the post before, the best solutions were:
-
Make a secondary objective location that is capturable by attackers in order to gain either more tickets or another buff of some kind FOR THAT SEGMENT.
-
Map-specific structural advantage. This was perhaps the most supported one. Essentially the secondary objective would favor both attackers and defenders in terms of advantage. It would be a neutral zone that could be fought over, so even if attackers took it, defenders could take it back.
The advantage could be things like:
- An AI controlled AA array
- Ability to call in stronger bombardments
- An area with indestructible MGs
- even a more protected flank route into the main objective, that when held by defenders, only defenders could pass through. Like an auto closing bunker door (this was the most popular)
By doing it this way, it would NOT be a REQUIREMENT, but it would definitely make it easier as the advantage could make a difference for BOTH teams.
It would start out in the hands of defense as part of their “homefield advantage”.
It would require defenders to prioritize their defenses accordingly, which for attackers may mean weaker defenses to go through.
In the case of an AI controlled AA array, it would give ground troops more options to make a difference against aircraft which as we have seen can sometimes spend the entire game otherwise uncontested.
All of this however should also be taken into account with addition of defenders getting the heads up as to where the main and secondary objectives of all points are going to be, so that engineers have the opportunity to back up and fortify in advance.

While it would be interesting to have some secondary objectives, I tend to lean more towards leaving the game mode just as it is because I think it’s fine.
