Usefulness of AA

Currently, the AA emplacement is a 20mm FlaK 30 (the ‘Flakvierling’) with a low ammo count, high reload, and slow turnrate. While quite balanced against tanks (as in, it won’t do all that much to them) and performing as expected against infantry, it seems to struggle with its main task in my eyes: Taking down enemy planes.

While it might be a ‘Learn2Play’ issue on my part, shooting down planes consistently is the biggest problem I have. Slower-moving planes are a lot easier to score solid hits on, but your average fighter plane (in both the Yak-1 & Bf 109) will have an easier time dodging the rounds and groundpounding the emplacement before the reload is done. The Stuka and IL-2 both seem to tank an inordinate amount of shots before going down, and this creates a bit of a void wherein they often have a free pass to bomb freely for half a game.

I suggest tweaking the AA emplacement’s efficiency by increasing the damage against the attackers (IL-2 & Ju-87) and by slightly decreasing it against the common fighter plane (Bf-109 & Yak-1). Slightly increasing the rotation speed while keeping the reload rate the same would prevent them from becoming too overpowered.

I don’t think the rotation rate is too low, but it could use more ammo in it. The trick is to anticipate the plane’s movement, not try to chase it.

I do think that shooting down planes should be more rewarding, because there’s little reason to use it against planes rather than infantry and tanks.

One thing to note is that it fires 4 shots per ammo consumed, aka 40 shots per reload. On top of that, it seems to use the exact same 20mm gun as the Pz2C, while in reality it would have a later variant of 20mm, the same one as used on the Pz2F and Wirbelwind. Talking about the wirbel, its turret has 80 shots but consumes 4 per shot, making it 20 rounds if it was in Enlisted, which is afaik the default magazine size for the AA 20mm guns. Only reason why the Pz2 has less is because that magazine wouldn’t fit in the Pz2 turret.

probably a good time to bring it up- what did WWII light AA look like?
These look out of place so I somehow doubt it was those.

looks like what we have should be on a trailer at the very least

And I think rotation speed is to low. Good pilots know how to make sharp turns to outmaneuver AA gun. At least those which I try to shoot down.

Well germany generally used single 13mm heavy MGs, single 20mm autocannons, quad 20mm autocannons, or 88mm cannons (anti-bomber)

Russia used Maxim MGs, DShK heavy MGs or 37mm autocannons.

America used roof mounted 50cals, quad 50s or 40mm Bofors

I’m saying the actual setups of the guns and not the choice of guns themselves.

When I do a quick search on it, it shows 4-wheeled wagon-y or 2-wheel artillery-style towed AA guns. I found one picture that looked like the engineer AA that exists in-game, but it was too much of a closeup to show what it was sitting on.

You’d see most of the setups as you would see on the early AA vehicles in War Thunder, but set only a platform mount instead of on a halftrack/truck/tank.

Except for the 13mm and bofors and flakvierling, they are all there
