The Sd.Kfz.222 was a light armored car designed in 1935 as an improved version of it’s predecessor, the Sd.Kfz.221, featuring an improved hull and a 20mm cannon. It was used extensively across all European theaters during the war as reconnaissance and staff vehicles, but also in policing, infantry support, and anti-air roles. It was most effective earlier on in the war, but regardless was used up until the very end in 1945. In total, 994 vehicles were manufactured before production stopped late 1943, so due to the high numbers made, I think tech tree would be the best way to implement this.
At the very thickest, the front armor plate was 30mms thick, but in general was very thinly armored. It had ‘Hängelafette’ turret installed on the roof, which was a short, hexagonal design. The turret was open topped but had closeable mesh anti-grenade screens. This turret used the same main gun as the Flakpanzer I, the 20mm KwK 38 cannon (450 RPM), and also had a coaxial MG34 in the same mount.
As a quite iconic vehicle, I think it would be really nice to see in game some way. I think that this could be a good start to improving the rider class, lightly armed and armored but can still have quite an effect on games if played properly.
I disagree with making it Rider because Rider’s job is basically to jump off and fight on the ground. Plus various armored cars are already “tanks”. Do we just make all of them Rider vehicles
But these vehicles are basically light tanks. You’re wasting their main gun and potential if the entire point of Rider is to hop off and fight on the ground. That’s why you can add AT, MG, etc to them. Imagine pulling up in a Puma and just jumping out!
It makes sense for Rider to get jeeps/ basic cars because they’re not really meant for sustained combat. Just drive up and get out
But they barely have a reason for existing as it is right now. The best strategy for tanks, however much I dislike it, is lobbing HE while sitting in the back and anything but the heaviest tank with the best HE is essentially a wasted tank slot. Armoured cars aren’t effective enough to be chosen in the current game and as such should not be doomed to die amongst the tanks.
The same can be said about every single vehicle that isn’t the King Tiger. At the end of the day it’s just about variety. Armored cars are basically light tanks. I always say you just spawn as whatever vehicle you want and do whatever job you can
If I have a light vehicle in my roster you can bet I’m gonna use it if I feel like it, for better or worse
Yes, that’s right. We need the sd.kfz.222 four-wheeled armored vehicle because we already have the 8-wheeled Puma armored vehicle in our armory tech tree, and adding a new light armored vehicle in tiers 1-2 is just right.
