Title asks. I want to be hopeful but there haven’t been so much as patch notes on the issue in a while, or what the “vision” is for how they (devs) hope them to function.
This game is SO beyond unique and the potential is massive. Even better animations for the standard “run” would do worlds for immersion. I’ve been thinking on this since the news came about the name change.
Such a bold move in the games market requires some “oomph” to back it up. Hard to believe that the exponential improvements to AI tech in the last couple years havent reached this game…
I concur. I think the guiding perspective is that human players should do the overwhelming majority of the work. I always find that my AI does decent when I give the squad an order to defend an area whereas if you are just running around with your squad following you, they do literally nothing more than follow you.
You have to order your squad forward and they’ll be at least minimally competent.
In an example round I had today, I was playing Pacific and ordered my squad to defend the bank of a river. They were opening fire on Japs crossing the bridge and I was set up at an angle to pop them when they paused to return fire. AI squadmates (4 of them) accounted for 9 kills during that exchange. It’s not much, but it’s honest work.
I think AI could be improved in terms of making your bots more surviable, taking cover, etc. I know that people probably don’t want AI racking up kills, but Im sure it would be appreciated if they had some better AI for staying alive.
I have nothing against stupid bots, if they hid too well people would complain that they have to look for them with squinted eyes, the only improvements I would like are for them to stop looking at the wall and other such things that spoil the basics of realism.
Again, make sure to order your AI squad mates forward. They will take up a position. If you “cancel all orders” and have them following you, they will rarely do anything besides follow you.
Ai needs to be at least little bit more competent in survivability and defence. I’ve been pierced by bayonet when shooting out of the window thinking my back is safe because 7 armed squad mates are right behind me only to find out they are incompetent to take down single attacker feels so dumb especially when you stumble upon enemy stashed forward spawn point (bots from player squad) and it is so inconsistent that sometimes you can take them one by one with BA and they don’t seem to notice you and other times they insta kill you when they detect your shoulder in door. So from my observation it is glaring inconsistency in Ai behavior that switches from blind incompetent fool to terminator on random. Also squad is unable to react to cover and cannot travers the map safely without making themselves easy targets or they like to exit buildings because roof of a bunker is the best place to be during arty strike. They also like to go in front of you if you are aimig. I remeber that it used to be far worse but they still do it way too often.
