Tanks NEED work

The tanks in this game are decent but they lack a few features in my opinion.

First off is the fact that you only have HE, ABCBC, or sometimes smoke. There aren’t any AP, APHE, or HEAT rounds. So if you’re in a tiger shooting at a stuart, even though you are more than capable of penning that tank, your shell will most likely go straight through the tank and out the other side making you have to reload and shoot it multiple times to kill it if you don’t manage to hit it in the exact spot where the ammo stowage is.

2nd off is the HE is completely broken in my opinion. Lets say there is a group of 11 guys sitting beside a stone wall in a circle. If you shoot the middle of that wall with HE, it might kill 1 or 2 guys but the rest will be fine. However, if you shoot one of the guys directly with the HE shell, everyone in that area will die. Not to mention, a 76mm sherman HE should be able to kill a puma (or really the 50. cal turret should be able to kill it). Light tanks shouldn’t be immune to HE shells.

3rd is the machine gunner is completely useless. The only point in having him is, at best, to have an extra body to use for emergencies. Make him controllable, or shoot when you fire the machine guns, or the other alternative comes up next:

The 4th problem is there’s no ai whatsoever. This would be a perfect role for the machine gunner. He shouldn’t just sit there as an extra body, and while I suggested it, I don’t think he should be player controlled. He should fire on his own at enemy infantry.
On top of that, when you exit the tank, the ai should take over control of the weaponry. It’s absolutely stupid that if you get your track taken out in the middle of a fight and you have to repair, your tank just sits there while you get surrounded. It should do something rather than sit there waiting for you to get back to micromanage every little thing.
I’m not saying it should be a laser and kill everything that moves an inch, but it should do something! Have it throw suppressive fire!

Right now, the tanks can be about as helpless as the bombers were before they had gunners that would shoot. And even now, the bombers are still threatened, but at least they have a chance to kill the enemy chasing them. In a tank, if you have to get out to repair without waiting for your team to cover you (which rarely happens) or until the entire enemy team just leaves you alone (which also rarely happens), you’re entire tank becomes vulnerable because it does absolutely nothing to protect itself!

Please, make the tanks a bit more lively soon!

Forgot to mention for the HE shells. If you shoot a bunker, or the window of a house; everything in the area should die. Not one or maybe 2 guys.

The HE explodes in an outward cone, so try hitting a wall behind the infantry or below them.

Also…for whatever reason, direct hits on infantry are really effective. It seems like the aoe gets amplified.

Hopefully when the game gets into the alpha stage or later stages we will get war thunder ammunition and damage models.

Where? Only ammo type I for anti tank I have seen is APCBC.

Tanks are in a wierd place atm. Yes HE can slap entire squads but all the little “changes” made tanks continuosly more frustrating to play. The first problematic nerf i witnessed was the crippling nerf to tank mg causing all german tank MGs to melt instantly. This got lessend in a somewhat recent patch but they still overheat fast.
The tank MG nerf was bad but with good HE tanks with good HE could still clear enemy points and push back infantry. With nerfs to HE and shells bouncing for no reason whatsoever I just cant recomend pushing aggressivly like i used to in my trusty F1. The only real option is to use the greyzone to defend vs infantry but this only annoys the infantry even more (example all the greyzone camper rants on forum).

Even the 75 mm of the F1 or Pz 4e cant really deal with russian hiding directly next to the window as the backwall somehow wont generate any fragments or the side wall cause the round to bounce and once it bounced it cant explode even if it would just be deflected into a perfectly fine wall right next to the enemy.

And every time someone complained about the state HE shells ppl just claim skill issue and post a screen of that one time where HE actually exploded like intendend ignoring all the othere times where it just vanished.

Edit: and please rework the hull MG slot on japanese tanks as there is no need for seperate gunner and a mg gunner if you dont have a commander anymore. This means whenever I want to switch to the commander my gunner must change seat first while the very restricted mg gunner just keeps beeing useless and does nothing.

This wouldnt be as bad if you could actually cancel the swaping of seats but you cant. So every time i want to look around in commander view it cripples my main gun for a few seconds. So please give commander priority over the MG or add a setting where you can set the priority for seats.

Expand the small objective instead of nerfing HE
HE shell should be more powerful even though it’s a small cannon.
Dev you don’t like that tank keeping shooting HE to infantry?
Than expand the objective and increase the accessibility to all kind of AT methods, especially AT cannon.
AT cannon is an essential element in real battle, and it should be in this game too.
But now we hardly see AT cannons. Considering its importance, it should be seen as often as the rally point.

Tanks have been in an awkward state at least since Normandy (where they began to be a pain in the ass).

Maps are too small and mostly tanks can lock down half of the map from the spawn area which is “fine” as especially in late war campaigns you can easily kill them as inf. At the same time, tanks are way slower than they should be, which is an issue, especially for light tanks and tanks such as the M18. “Because of balance”. Those come from the same studio, which also makes armor of tanks stronger than they should, most notably on Soviet tanks, or not fixing shells of tanks, most notably the IS or the Panther. And at the same time, we often had tanks (Jumbo, T34 in Moscow or mostly now the KT) which cant be killed by other tanks in a fair way, which made grey zone camping even worse.

Another issue is also that you can spam tanks way too easily and mostly people insta spawn a tank the second you blew up the last one.
Overall, Df usually has two options:

  • Nerf
  • Limit

And so far, they keep choosing the first option and wonder, why their game is so ridiculous and a stat mess to the point where I stopped caring.

To add to this point: it would be cool if there was a command to order one of the ai crewmen out to repair while you covered them.

It would also be nice if engineers could refill tank ammunition. They can already refill ammo on AT and AA guns.

I FORGOT A MAJOR PAIN IN THE ### FOR TANKS!!!
Why is it every single tank’s MG in this game overheats after 4 seconds? It’s a tank! I know it’s “technically for balance” but that’s stupid. In the words of an American soldier training a German soldier, “it’s a machine gun, hold it down”.

most likely the fact that most of the round shrapnel isnt absorbed into the ground, a wall , tree or what ever.
