as it stands when you’re swimming in one of the levels that has a river for example, the banks all seem low enough to walk out onto but instead you find yourself going along the edge of the river until you find the magic point that lets you out

True, it’s a trap. You can go in, but you can’t come out.

It’s so hard to escape from that apparently tier 3 engineers will be able to build small rivers, as defences, which will be totally impenetrable.

This does need to be fixed, but what I do in the mean time is before I start to swim, I press X ordering my squad across the river. Once one of them is across on dry land, I switch to him. Once my original soldier is out, I change back. It is the best work-around I could find.
