Suggestion for how calling in Arty should work

Simple suggestion, I feel that calling in arty should change to function similarly to how it does in the Rising Storm series. Where you need a friendly arty marker or your own in order to call in arty in a specific spot. In Enlisted, this could function similarly to RS where the mark can only be made by using binoculars. This would limit the abusability of arty as it currently is, and it’d add an element to the arty gameplay where you have to physically go out and get marks for arty. Or you could communicate with your team and request that someone with binos get you a good mark.

I think this would be much better than how calling in arty currently works. Where at the moment, you can call it in on virtually any spot on the map you want as soon as you have it. Which makes it fairly abusable as we all have experienced.

i already suggested a realistic fix to artillery a long time ago… binoculars would be a nice tool but would be really unrealistic to how artillery actually works in real life…

my suggestion is making it so each team starts the battle with an ammo count of 250 shells that restock at a rate of 25 per minute… wouldn’t remove the potential of artillery spam but would make it very detrimental to do if your not hitting anything…

Yeah, it would be fairly unrealistic honestly. But I think it’d be a great substitute compared to what we have now and even compared to the method you suggested. It’s just the least exploitable route and it’d be the fairest tbh. As both teams would not be able to just up and call in arty as soon as a match starts. It’d lead to much more interesting and fair arty gameplay rather than the spammy mess we have at the moment.

I do like elements of what you suggested, however. It’s an interesting thought to limit the amount of arty that the teams have and if they choose to waste it, then they’ll have to wait it out till they are resupplied. But again, it’s just too exploitable with the current targeting system for arty.

your suggestion would give allies and axis serious advantages and disadvantages based on what map your playing like take D-Day beach for example… axis would have an unbelievable advantage over the allies just cause they can retreat up hill for a birds eye view, and then on the mansion map whoever is on the side of the farmhouse would have the advantage because the rows of trees block your line of sight from anyone advancing on point A… same with swamp… whoever gets the beach would have the upper hand because C gives you a view of the entire friggen map…

no… artillery needs an ammo count that’s shared by the entire team… so if its spammed everyone on the team running radio guys gets screwed by the restock timer…

Fair point fair point. Didn’t really consider the maps like D-day and the like since I mainly just play Moscow. But even on these maps, it’d be a lot better for someone to have to physically spot the target. Rather than the person just hiding away in a bunker somewhere calling arty on the normal enemy markers we currently have. With my suggestion, at the very least we would have a chance to take out the person spotting these targets. Rather than not having any chance at all when they’re hiding away somewhere off the obj.

Perhaps you’re right though, the issue here with both my suggestion and the current method of arty is this unlimited use of it that we currently have. So perhaps, a mixture of both of our suggestions could be a solution? Think about it, the person would still have to go out and physically spot these targets, while also needing to be mindful of the very limited use of their arty. So they can’t just spam arty, and they have to be careful when going out and spotting targets. As anyone could just snipe them the moment they come out. I’d prefer this physical aspect to the mechanic since like I said, it at least gives us a chance to pinpoint their location and take them out rather than allowing them to hide in a closet somewhere.

Edit: In addition to the limited use of arty, maybe a longer cooldown would also suit it nicely to reduce arty spam. Somewhere around 3-4 minutes cooldown honestly should be a good amount to reduce that arty spam in addition to the limited ammo for it.

the thing is radio operators provide grid locations when they radio in for a shelling these grid locations are on a map which they carry and the artillery team also has (usually that guys sitting in a bunker 24/7 by the guns looking at a map and listening to a radio for any calls)

a map kinda like this
txu-oclc-10552568-index

not saying i wouldn’t like a pair of binoculars on my radioman o.o’ then i wouldn’t need a sniper anymore but restricting it to LoS calls is a little mehh unrealistic in my eyes

I see what you’re trying to say here and I think you got a good point. I was thinking about it though, and well wouldn’t there be somebody that’s spotting these targets for the guy that’s calling in the arty? Like I understand that the radioman is gonna go based on the grid like how you showed there when calling in the arty.

But is it outlandish to think that there would be others spotting targets for the arty and helping to get an accurate grid coord for the arty strike??

Edit: I guess at the same time tho, I can see why it’d be unrealistic. Since the radio operator wouldn’t be able to just say whatever coord on the grid that they need. They’d be restricted to whatever coord the arty mark is near. So I can see that perspective on that as well tbh

yea the whole marking system is kinda weird… but it does make sense since they did have walkies they could use to relay troop locations in the war

also they should add coloured marking smoke grenades that will give assists to the person who threw it if any enemy/vehicle is killed within its radius, when used the smoke could show an icon on the map that corresponds with the colour so if an infantry smoke is thrown it will show a little soldier icon on the map where it was thrown

Allies Smoke Colours could be Red for infantry & Yellow for vehicle
Axis Smoke Colours could be Orange for infantry & Green for vehicle

it would incentivize people to run with something other than explosive packs, like say your a sniper and you see a tank but don’t wanna give your location away you can chuck a marking smoke

like of course they had the backpack walkies like these

but thats only if you needed more then 3 miles of range, the hand held walkies operated fine within a 1 mile radius

Huh that’s an interesting idea actually. Using colored smokes as a sort of a way for regular inf to spot enemies or something. I’d be interested in seeing something like that to try and promote teamwork and communication more. But sadly I can’t see it happening  especially not with all the folks who want more arcadey gameplay and wouldn’t want more realistic or tactical features like this. Nice idea tho ngl

Also interesting stuff there regarding radios. I did not know that tbh

well if the smokes give assists when an enemy/vehicle is killed within them i think that’s by far enough encouragement to use them, the teamwork will just follow afterwards when everybody finally gets on the same page
