So the Berlin air superiority fighters - anyone use them?

For the Soviets the Yak 3 and P-63, and whatever the equivalents are for the axis - fighters with no CAS load - does anyone actually use them?

Have you had any good experience with them?

Seems to me they are a waste of space - and money if you bought one!!

I got the Yak last week, realised my mistake first tiem I used it - back to the La-5 immediately, because even 2 x 50kg bombs are better than nothing!!

Same here. I think I’ve flown two missions in a Yak, and concluded that unless the enemy team is relying on their CAS heavily, I really don’t see any use for pure fighters.
It is a beautiful machine, though, I’m still glad to have unlocked it, but I see very little use for it the way the game is right now.

They are good… if you unlocked enough squad slots and don’t mind having a dedicated anti cas weapon. The yak, even though has not alot of ammunition… Got a 37mm gun. That thing shreds other planes, including bombers. Even in their bullet sponge state, no bomber resists that wonderful canon. So there’s that. (You can also make a quick strafe when you destroyed everything in the air, the 37 produces lots of shrapnel, like for the first bomber.)

I haven’t played either of the fighters mentioned (staying out of Berlin for now) but isn’t a 37mm gun an excellent CAS weapon?
I tend to get more ground kills with the Bf-110’s guns, than I do with the rockets.

The planes have powerful cannons, I have taken out tanks with them.

I take the fighter with no bomb even on Normandy to clear the sky since they are better for dogfight (speed, maneuverability, armement).

They are good only for air to air combat. Imo they are superior there.

I hope to see the day we can change the loadout and have bombs or rockets in them.

P63 is a good cas plane imo, max speed 700+ with a large amount ammo (almost twice 37mm ammo as yak9t), so it can do a double or triple gun running by attacking from germen’s back. A good cas run always occurs from enemy attackting direction.
In berlin, german spawn point is easy to hit and garden street cap point have no cover from defend side. Shoot their back to get easy kills.

I have trouble seeing tanks accurately enough for a gun run - I can see where they shoot from with the cannon or MG, but often by the time I’m ready to attack a marker placed by my team it has moved far enough so I have to make significant course change to hit it even with rockets.

Only real success I’ve ever had with guns is into the gatehouse to the Ministry garden (?) - the colonnaded structure that is an objective in the garden assault/invasion games - the Il-2 37mm have gotten a decent number of kills gunning into that speculatively.

My experience with CAS is limited to Normandy. Maybe the 37mm shells on the Bf-110 are better but with that thing I just need to spray the general area and infantry drop like flies. I don’t need to see anything. I approach slowly and start shooting from a far distance, so i have enough time to really saturate an area.

I was one able to kill a M8 with my BF 110 37mm gun, I’ve also used 110 rockets to kill a few Jumbos

Yeah - I’ve been killed in the M8 by 110 cannon too - the open top makes it even more vulnerable and the 30mm’s help with that.

Dunno what the ammo mix is on the various 30-37mm guns, but the few times I hit tanks with soviet 37mm in Berlin only ever got white X’s - indicating no damage. Same guns into cap points kill a few infantry pretty regularly.

Making sure you attack from the rear should help - top armour is the weakest no matter what angle but from the rear you probably get more of the engine deck to hit…

Rockets aren’t an issue.
