I say absolutely, in fact, here’s a list of the most universally recognized, well-known battles of World War II, the ones that virtually everyone who knows even a little about WWII has at least heard of.
To make it more transparent and helpful, I’ve grouped them by theaters of war, though all are globally famous.
EUROPEAN THEATER
These are the battles most people immediately think of when they hear “WWII.”
Battle of Britain (1940)
The first major campaign fought entirely by air forces; Britain’s Royal Air Force held off the German Luftwaffe.
Famous for: “The Few,” radar use, Churchill’s speeches.
Battle of Stalingrad (1942–1943)
Turning point on the Eastern Front; brutal urban combat between Germany and the USSR.
Famous for: its massive casualties and symbolic Soviet victory.
D-Day / Battle of Normandy (June–August 1944)
Allied amphibious invasion of Nazi-occupied France.
Famous for: Omaha Beach, paratroopers, Saving Private Ryan, and the liberation of Western Europe.
Battle of the Bulge (Dec 1944 – Jan 1945)
Germany’s last major offensive in the west.
Famous for: Ardennes forest fighting, “Nuts!” reply at Bastogne.
Battle of Berlin (April–May 1945)
The final major battle in Europe; Soviet forces captured Berlin, leading to Hitler’s death and Germany’s surrender.
Famous for: Reichstag flag, end of the war in Europe.
Operation Market Garden (Sept 1944)
Ambitious Allied airborne operation to secure bridges in the Netherlands.
Famous for: “A Bridge Too Far,” paratroopers, strategic overreach.
PACIFIC THEATER
These are the iconic battles between the U.S. and Japan.
Attack on Pearl Harbor (Dec 7, 1941)
Japanese surprise attack on the U.S. Navy in Hawaii; brought America into WWII.
Famous for: “A date which will live in infamy.”
Battle of Midway (June 1942)
U.S. Navy decisively defeated Japan’s carrier fleet.
Famous for: turning point in the Pacific, codebreaking success.
Battle of Guadalcanal (Aug 1942 – Feb 1943)
The first major Allied offensive against Japan.
Famous for: jungle fighting, naval-air battles around the Solomon Islands.
Battle of Iwo Jima (Feb–Mar 1945)
U.S. Marines captured the island after fierce Japanese resistance.
Famous for: the flag raising on Mount Suribachi (iconic photo).
Battle of Okinawa (Apr–Jun 1945)
Largest amphibious assault in the Pacific, precursor to a possible invasion of Japan.
Famous for: kamikaze attacks, immense casualties, and prompting atomic bomb decision.
EASTERN FRONT (USSR vs Germany)
While Stalingrad is the most famous, several others are well-known even to casual history fans.
Battle of Moscow (1941–1942)
Soviet defense of the capital; halted Hitler’s advance.
Battle of Kursk (July–Aug 1943)
Largest tank battle in history.
Famous for: clash of Titans, German defeat marking Soviet momentum shift.
AFRICAN & MEDITERRANEAN THEATER
Slightly less famous to the general public, but still widely recognized.
Second Battle of El Alamein (Oct–Nov 1942)
British victory in North Africa under Montgomery over Rommel’s Afrika Korps.
Famous for: “Before Alamein we never had a victory.”
Invasion of Sicily & Italy (1943–1945)
Allied campaign that toppled Mussolini and opened the southern front.
Famous for: Anzio, Monte Cassino, Italian surrender.
WORLDWIDE SYMBOLIC MOMENTS (technically not battles, but often cited equally)
Operation Barbarossa (1941) – German invasion of the Soviet Union (largest land invasion in history).
Bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki (Aug 1945) – atomic bombings that ended the war in the Pacific.
Battle of the Atlantic (1939–1945) – U-boat vs convoy struggle that lasted the entire war.
If I narrow it down to the Top 10 “Most Well-Known to Everyone”
Here’s the shortlist most people (even non-historians) recognize:
D-Day / Normandy
Pearl Harbor
Battle of Stalingrad
Battle of the Bulge
Battle of Midway
Battle of Iwo Jima
Battle of Britain
Battle of Berlin
Battle of Okinawa
Battle of El Alamein
So, if you like, I could make a Score Card for those Top 10 battles (rating each by Strategic Impact, Human Cost, Symbolism, and Global Recognition). It would show which battle is most famous and decisive overall.
Agreed, with the way it’s listed with the emojis (that’s something ChatGPT does) and as well as the fact that most of these battles wouldn’t work in enlisted or are already in enlisted.
I mean what comes to mind, is the Battle for Ponyri, sometimes described as “mini stalingrad”.
But generally speaking, its a lot of open fields and trench lines, it wont translate amazingly.
However what could work for the likes of Kursk or the Battle of Britain, is as a special “fair fight” type event, instead with all vehicle count restrictions lifted, meaning you could have a 12v12 of tanks or aircraft. Though custom objectives would be needed, either bomber escort or etc for planes, and objectives capturable by tanks for a kursk like map.
Side note, fuck this AI suggestion though, lazy af.
Already exists. Also why did you separate stalingrad from other eastern front battles?
Already exists
Already exists
Already exists
They did have a event for this. Im fine with more maps for americans but it is not high on priority list
Once again only aircraft and AA guns. Will not happen
That’s a naval battle. The closest thing we have for navy is lvt a1 and ka chi. Will not happen
Already exists
Definitely should happen
Absolutely should happen
Already exists
Could work as a map but they need to balance it out so it isn’t just a flat field where tanks can farm infantry
Similar to kursk. If they manage to turn flat desert into playable map then sure why not.
Absolutely should happen
Already exists as moscow but we could get more early war barbarossa maps
This isn’t even a battle
Naval battle so no
Also maybe tell the AI what battles exist in enlisted before making a suggestion. Half of your suggested maps are either total nonsense or already exist
I think the gameplay would be very similar to tunisia oasis map. Objectives are located at little villages but there is lots of open ground between them. If they ever make kursk map they should increase the tank limit to 3-4 so it feels like the biggest tank battle in history and not just some random russian field
Like, I don’t mind AI as a tool, but when you just give the AI a topic, don’t even check what it presents to you, and then present absolute nonsense to us, then it’s gone too far.
I have used AI to properly write my suggestions many times, especially when I was forgetting some names but I was fact checking and looking for sources. But you didnt even bothered to remove already existing campaigns from this clanker esque suggestion… It feels like a spam
