The Remington Model 11 “long pattern” prototype was an experimental, semi-automatic trench shotgun developed for the U.S. military during World War I. It featured an extended magazine tube and a unique mounting system for a bayonet, but the design never advanced past the prototype stage due to the end of the war.
Key Features of the Prototype
- Semi-Automatic Action: Unlike the common pump-action Winchester Model 1897 trench gun, the Remington Model 11 was a long-recoil operated semi-automatic shotgun, based on a John Browning design.
- Bayonet Lug and Handguard: To facilitate bayonet fighting, a metal sleeve (tube) was mounted to the front of the receiver, and a bayonet lug was attached to it. It was also fitted with an extended wooden fore-end that functioned as a handguard.
- “Long Pattern” Design: There were at least two variations of the prototype, differing in length. The “long pattern” had a longer tubular magazine, believed to hold a capacity of seven rounds in the magazine plus one in the chamber (8 rounds total).
- Military Interest and Abandonment: The prototypes were completed around the time of the Armistice in the fall of 1918. With the war ending, the U.S. Ordnance Department dropped the project, and the concept was not revisited.
I would love to see more shotguns in the game an eight shotgun is not a big deal but it be fun to have a shotgun with a bayonet. a br2 event gun that would be good as an either or for the Remington 11 short gun i suggested. sorry for the recent spam of posts but i have just been in the mood. thank you for the tolerance and consideration.
