REICHSREVOLVER M1879
HISTORY
Reichsrevolver M1879 - is a large-caliber German revolver adopted by the Imperial German Army in 1879. Development was carried out by Krupp and several other German arms firms with the aim of producing a more reliable and powerful service revolver after the models of the 1870s became obsolete. The Reichsrevolver was noted for its heavy-duty construction and reliable double-action with a relatively simple mechanism, which made it practical under frontline conditions. The revolver was used by German forces in colonial conflicts and World War I, remaining in service into the 1920s, when it was gradually replaced by more modern designs. A total of several tens of thousands of examples of all variants were produced.
During World War II the Reichsrevolver M1879 was used mainly as a secondary weapon. It was issued to rear-echelon, reserve and auxiliary units, police and security services, andβduring the final years of the warβto the Volkssturm (peopleβs militia). It was rarely used in front-line combat because of its outdated design, but it remained a robust and reliable weapon for training, guard duty, and ceremonial purposes.
