what backpack should I give to the engineers?
The biggest?
No the type granade ammo normal one
For medic
More first-aid kits, lives longer.
always go for Big ammo pouches.
other types are prety much useless in my eyes on normal soldiers.
huge grenade bags for bombers.
large backpacks for tankers with 3 repair tools each and a medkit.

well, personally i suggest you to give them the big backpack for slots equipments.
mainly because than you can give them 3 medkits in order to heal everyone, and than equip a toolbox to repair friendly tanks.
ammo are somewhat useless since they can build ammo boxes in the first place.
weather for grenades, dunno.
i wouldn’t stick them to an enginner. he is not one like any normal troopers to send to the front as " squad leader ".
like, he has more value than any other troops. so yeah, not worthed either.
but that’s my personal opinion.

Normal always on engy since you need to survive more when building/crossing the place you want to build.

Is it possible to repair Allied tanks?
it is but its hard since they gonna move a lot and its hard to know they need repair or not.
This is too situational
also you get killed fast when focusing way too hard on fallowing tank.
This is the same kind of volunteer work as playing fighter planes and playing for an engineer.
expect from 3 of these things only 2 awards you.
1 engineering point = 3 experience points,it is very small.
As an engineer you want to reach a point and build something. Backpack with medkits helps to keep it alive. The other guys in the squad can shoot and grenade things.
Mine have 3 med + 1 toolbox. 3 is enough to reach points and the one for the offchance you can repair a friendly tank.
