Question about StuG III G

Shouldn’t it have 80mm armor on the trapezoidal mantlet?
Anyone get any sources or videos on the topic?

I dont think so - which is why it later got upgraded with a Jagdpanzer IV like round gunmantlet.

Sadly we dont have those Stugs even in warthunder.

Its a pitty, because the STUGs with those round gun mantles even had a coax MG.

apparently they’re in the works.

In warthunder? Interesting.

leaked, sometime ago.
Both StuG G late and StuG IV are supposedly in the works.
I really hope its true.

Big if true

This isn’t definitive proof, but I found a picture of a StuG 3 G with everything painted white except the add-on armor and the front of the mantlet is also unpainted, maybe suggesting that it’s also a 30mm plate?

That is actually a good point. I’ll go check it out, maybe I find something about that.

Apparently both early and late STUG III G gun mantlets had almost the same weight, because those had to be balanced correctly with the guns recoil system. Considering it used a similar gun as STUG III F - I suspect its gun mantlet didnt recieve the increase of armor from the STUG III G upgrade.

dangit

I mean, its also one explanation why Panzer IV never had 80mm turret armor or big gun shield. Same gun overall.

Would the turret armor affect the stabilisation? Since the gun is resting on the turret?
Also how come they thickened the mantlet of the panther G, yet not the stug?

Panther uses a different gun.

But the principle is the same, is it not?

Not sure - but Panther was famously overburdened - Original concept of Panther A was a lighter vehicle in general.

Also its gun mantlet wasn’t really thicker besides the lower part of its gun mantlet - because version A turrets had a nasty shot trap that often redirected even regular Sherman and T34 hits into its crew ( top armor of Panther was patheticly thin because of weight, just 16mm ).

My thought process was that the panther’s mantlet with the chin is probably heavier than the original one, so maybe it’d impact the stabilisation? The mantlet of the earlier tanks was thickened aswell, on the panzer 3s and 4s

I am not to sure how those work mechanically - panthers gun barrel leaves the gun shield straigt, while Panzer IV and Stug have parts of their recoil balance system sticking out. But regardless, 7.5 L70 is a complete different design to L48 guns, its just the caliber thats the same, but the propellant is much larger for Panther guns, thus the almost 200mm of penetration.
