I have been away for a few months. In that time, the academy has been removed. It now appears that I rank up individual soldier directly via orders.
Does this mean I no longer need to have 50+ pilots to get one max rank pilot?
Instead, can I just have one pilot and rank him up?

Yes, dump them all and get more bronze orders for that.
if you want optimal soldiers you will still need to spend a lot, so i suggest taking a look at the stats of your soldiers before you dump them
the base stats are 4/4/4(lvl 1) + whatever soldier bonuses they have(with +2/+2/+2 for each level)
the most important one is 4 base vitality(heart icon) for the increased health perk

Moreover you should take note that nowadays, 1 star soldiers with BASE (without class bonus) of 4/4/4 are invaluable, because it’s harder to obtain good starter stats now. If you want a quick pile of bronze, send all those lvl 1 who are 3/3/3 or less, since when max stared, they won’t be able to obtain the best perks.
Do I get something for dumping them? It sounds like you guys are saying I get a bronze order when I dismiss a solider. That sounds nice. I don’t think that was true before.

The higher star lvl, the more bronze is refunded. I think higher tier soldiers of high star lvl also refund more bronze when sent back.
It’s viable sending back some troopers or assaulters that didn’t pass the physical examination exam (at 5 stars, they didn’t reach at least 16 in vitality, or speed or weap handling) if you wish to create an ultimate squad of doom with the best perks. 5 star soldiers regain a good amount of bronze.
HOWEVER!!! Be advised it’s NOT recommended doing so if you are short on silver orders. Troops are now obtained at a MINIMUM of 2 stars, and with that their chances of having lower base stats (base stats are calculated by substracting 2 on each vitality/speed/wep. handling) are higher… So it WILL cost a lot of silver obtaining VIABLE soldiers (viable soldier being one that when 5 stars, has a minimum of 16/16/16)
