Player-Made Maps

Player-Made Maps

I think the developers should allow players to develop maps for the main game. Players have demonstrated—in many different games—that they can sometimes do a better job than the developers themselves. The game “Stranded Deep” is the perfect example: The game itself only featured two types of islands, large and small. There were very small differences between them in each category, which means that only after a few games you began seeing the same islands over and over again—which starts to get boring. However, players were allowed to create custom islands (maps), and upload them to the Workshop in Steam. The decision to allow player-made maps made the game a lot more interesting—and fun!

This is also a plus for the developers since they are basically getting work done for free, and also better for the players since they have more maps to play on.

If too many maps are submitted—which is likely—they could be put on rotation: One person’s map(s) are played for a specific period of time (such as a week or month), then a different persons map(s) are rotated in, while the previous persons map(s) are rotated out.

I think a test server for player’s maps would be a good testing ground for them so other players could play on them, test them, leave suggestions for them, and vote to allow the map into the main game (or not). The developers would have to make the final decision, and possibly work with the map makers to suggest improvements, as well—which is a lot less work than making the maps themselves.

This would solve the problem of too few maps in the main game—plus it would allow a lot more variety in regard to maps to play on. You wouldn’t get tired of playing on the same maps all the time if they were on constant rotation. There are a lot of talented people out there. Why not use those talents to improve the game…
