I played WT since air CBT so I know how to fly, I have no trouble bombing targets, dogfighting, not killing myself, etc.
But I have one issue. The planes just absolutely refuse to die no matter how much ammo I pump into them. Everything is made of concrete. I can tell my gunfire has some effect because the more I shoot them the more sluggish the enemy gets. I’ve also never suffered a catastrophic failure of my plane. No wings/tails breaking off, had an engine fire 1 time and it just went out on its own.
Regardless, nearly 100% of my air kills so far have been either top-down pilot kills, or the enemy being weighed down from the amount of cannon ammo I put into their wings and they crash, with me getting kill cred. What is up with this?
I just played with it and wasted my whole ammo to get enemy smoking. I don’t have such problems in Normandy with stock Bf109. 20mm does the job better I guess.
Machine guns tend to not do much catastrophic damage. The individual hits are just too weak to wreck any one component all at once. Actual cannons, particularly the heavier ones, can and will shred off wings and the like, however. For some of the more undergunned fighters, like the first one you get for allied moscow, can benifit from trying to get really close and landing rockets, but that tends to not be easy to pull off.
The Chaika is capable at close range, and more than able to get there.
Cannons and HMGs are definitely better, but I find people like to start firing .30s as soon as they see a lead indicator and spook the target as a consequence.
True. I started having a lot more success once I began trying to fire only when the guns are actually on the lead indicator, rather than just holding down fire while they are “close enough”. Otherwise you just run out of ammo.
I still ignore the indicator, but what I mean is just because the indicator appears doesn’t mean you’re in range.
Common mistake with .30 cals is not telling the difference between hitting with all of your guns or just one.
If you’re hitting a lot and not doing anything, you aren’t hitting with many guns.
The closer you are, the more guns you’re likely to hit with at the same time.
