most of the MMO-s have some content locked behind grind if it is f2p (and some non f2p). not to mention on some you must spend money to unlock either content or QoL improvements besides normal grind.
You linked a 20 minute video and expected me to watch it RIGHT THEN AND THERE. And apparently I wasnāt allowed to respond until I watched said video?
Ironic
I think MMOās are different due to how they are designed.
That said, they can definitely monetize a grind poorly (looking at you Warframe)
Thatās fine
Also fine, as long as the QoL arenāt essential to having an enjoyable experience
Automatic reward collection and the ability to finish the event early without being time gated and forced to play every single day.
Iāve already missed one day simply because I forgot to collect.
i almost forgot to collect it today⦠after battle i often quit game to desktop and forget that there is event going onā¦
well enlisted is MMO if you believe devs
depends on the game and the way it is implemented. in some it is ok where content is optional, but in some is not where content is necessary for gameplay/balance.
also debatable. have seen various way f2p MMO-s stifled f2p players compared to paying customers and while those games are playable, i wouldnt exactly call them enjoyable.

Iām not sure gamedevs know what an MMO is anymore
Could you give some examples of MMOs where it is necessary?
Like I said, they are fine as long they arenāt essential to an enjoyable experience.
Granted, that can vary from person to person but I think the core experiences will remain the same.
Could you also provide some more examples here?
if you look at my new post in suggestions i also got screwed out of a day.
SW:TOR is one example. you get low levels for free and high levels are locked behind paywall. and those also include end game content and PvP
SW:TOR is another example of that. here is table of qol (and content) restrictions for f2p players. but there are many more that similarly limit QoL for f2p players. sure they dont limit you from playing the game, but annoy you with small details that make game much worse experience than for paying customers.
When comparing War Thunder and Enlisted grind and greed, never forget the major difference between the two games:
Unlike War Thunder, Enlisted has got and will have several direct competitors.
Enlisted have something that his competitor dont have:
- You dont need buy Enlisted every year like them Enlisted is free
- Enlisted support is planned to go on for decades and dont stop because yes
- Enlisted potential is very huge compared to his competitor who use the exactly same formula from 20y
Yes, but still competitors DO exist and will keep coming up in the future.
Unlike WT, whose only somewhat close competitors are WoT and possibly WoWS (albeit with a noticeably more arcade formula). DCS appeals to a whole different playerbase niche, and by now any new competitor would take years to even remotely bridge the gap in sheer amount of vehicles variety.
Hence the Snail being able to pull off almost any stunt it wants with near impunity, lest extremely rare occasions when they pull the rope so much that the whole playerbase uproars at once.
you need sell your liver and kidney for play DCS as how is meant to play
And dcs is more a simulation than a videogame, it is for a specific type of user, not for all user and that is wy
Because snail know how trap all user type and milk them, sure sometime the piss some of them even making them quit, but in the end is always able to take them back
I would say that is fair. There is quite a large amount of content you get for free and the content given is fairly good quality. But I can see your point.
I view MMO monetization (like endgame content locked behind paywall) as a standalone game with DLCs.
But I see your point
Now hereās where it gets tricky.
I personally donāt mind this for SW:TOR but I have a few friends who DO.
I think SW:TOR is definitely one that takes it a little too far with their QoL purchases, but to the extreme.
Exactly.
War Thunder covers a pretty niche gaming community
Enlisted has a ton of people in its community but those people are spread all over the place playing other games.
No, but you need to buy premium if you want to progress, which ends up being more than paying for a yearly game (even though not all of its competition makes yearly games)
90% of games are like this anymore
And they refuse to tap into that potential
If you have the choice of Enlisted (long grind, $80 a year to progress)
Or another game (short grind, $60 a year)
What are you gonna buy, unless Enlistedās gameplay blows you out of the water, which it doesnāt
Well, not quite⦠One year of premium account bought at seasonal sales is actually much less than a new AAA FPS release.
Bought at seasonal sales being key word.
AAA FPS games bought at seasonal sales arenāt expensive either
Personally I liked the event that had premade squads and a certain ruleset. I would like to see that done again, but with a test in mind:
- Fortifications could not be broken down by hand except by engineers.
- TNT mines would be given increased damage against fortification structures.
Squads would have things that a lot of players donāt use a lot of on average, like:
- All engineers are equipped with smoke grenades
- Only AT soldiers are equipped with explosive packs
- Engineer squad, as well as a few others would be predominately equipped with AP mines
- AT squad would get AT mines
- Assaulters and offense squads would be equipped with TNT mines
- Riflemen are equipped with large backpacks for medkits
- AA guns, AT field guns, and Czech Hedgehogs are not allowed indoors.
Iāve played this kind of ruleset in customs a few times and It was absolutely fantastic for both offense and defense. Tanks actually pushed up out of the greyzone pretty frequently, and were VERY useful.
If implemented as an event, it would let players experience it, and let developers collect info on it and how it could be used to change the main game.
As far as rewards, perhaps some unique engineer squads, a gold order, etc.
Also
Are these squads worth it?
Can you view these squads anywhere?
