Before the latest major Paratroopers update, I had talked here about how I thought this was an awful idea and that it would be harmful to the game in many major ways. Played the game for the 1st time after the update yesterday, and DAMN it is way worse than I even expected.
On every single point there were multiple paratroopers dropping just over it. I had a very close game defending on D-Day. On the last point, we were fiercely defending it, and the enemy were on its last reinforecements. And, then, 3-4 paratrooper squads just dropped right over the objective point and captured it in seconds. This is clearly an exploit.
In the specific game I mentioned, I was also very annoyed by the widespread use of flamethrowers + paradrops by the enemy.
I hate paratroopers so much, I wish I could see them entirely removed from the game. But since you are not going to do this, here are some suggestions on how to minimally fix them:
- Paratroopers shouldn’t be able to drop in a few seconds, like they currently do.
Right now, there is virtually no chance to shoot them mid-air, because they just drop so quickly and much faster than pilots, which is unrealisitc and makes them absolutely OP. Their drop time should be increased at least 3x.
- There should be a limitation on how many paratrooper squads can be used by a team simultaneously.
Just like planes and tanks (by the way, Paratroopers require a transport plane, so this change would make a lot sense). This would prevent the exploit I describe, where the enemy team just drops 3 or 4 paratrooper squads over point at the same time and capture it instantly, basically negating any chance to the defenders.
- Paratroopers should not be able to drop directly over objective points.
You can’t build spawns that are less than 50 meters from point. So why paradrops? It clearly breaks the game balance. Not to mention how unrealistic it is. Paratroopers weren’t deployed on such a small scale, and they weren’t deployed directly over areas of close-quarters fighting. Dropping directly over objective points should be blocked.
[edit: removed innacurate information]
Finally, I stress again just how awful this whole concept is to the game. It is completely historically-innacurate to have paratroopers that way, on such a small scale and near close-quarters fighting. But, worst, it breaks the game’s much-treasured linearity, and the tactics inherent to the squad system. Now you can just drop behind enemy lines and have some run-and-gun style BS gameplayer, like any other generic shooter nowadays.
I’m sincerely displeased and unmotivated to play in the moment.
