Currently overheating of MG nest is questionable in how it works. Hence another post about obvious things.
German MGs
MG34 and MG42 had to have barrel changed after ~200 rounds fired, so after one ammo box. MG team (gunner and assistant) can change barrel during reload so there is almost no additional delay caused by barrel change. Rotation of 3 barrels allowed for continued fire in combat conditions.
In game: should the barrel be instantly cooled after change or we should have physical representation of barrels? For example barrels are lying on the cloth near MG and gunner has to check if they are cooled enough (probably by touching).
Those MGs would overheat the most but would have realy quick barrel change (if we have assistant gunner then time it takes is unnoticeable if it’s done during reload).
Russian MGs
PM M1910 was a Maxim gun. British made a test on Vickers (another Maxim) and (if I remember correctly) results are as follows: they shot it for a week, constantly adding ammo and changing water, gun hasn’t stopped firing even once.
Barrel is meant to be changed after 2h of shooting in battle conditions (~20 000 bullets fired).
In game this MG would overheat the least (tbh I don’t think someone would overheat it in normal use) but would have the longest time to cool down (I would give it water change animation although I haven’t found any data about water change).
US MGs
Here is a problem. Browning M1919 hasn’t got any anti-overheating features unlike .50 M2 but it is an overkill. So:
a) US MG gunners are screwed when their gun overheats;
b) US has the best MG nest that can destroy walls;
About whole system: should cooling (for example barrel change) be forced or should the player decide when to do it?
If player is forced then should the gun overheat more when shooting and cool down when not shooting? Or leave it more real, so gun overheats slower but cools down realy slow?
If player can choose, then what would the overheat do? Less accuracy and higher malfunction chance?
I would also give overheating mechanic to LMGs but most of them don’t have changeable barrels.
MG nests must be fixed/nerfed, because the unlimited ammo and current overheating system is OP as you can see in this video below:
Some may think its the problem with map design, and that the OP places like you can see in the video must be removed, but that would not make any sense because players will find other ways to use MG nest in their advantage. This must be fixed by adding limited ammo or like the author of this post suggests to implement new overheating system in the game.
In video you can see that I made more than 140 kills and didnt even die once and all this in 12 minutes. Also this is not the first time I could menage to make this score, I’ve had even higher scores.
So, this must be changed as fast as possible, and also that tower in the map is not the only place where players can make scores like this, so removing the places where you can do this madness is not an option - fixing the MG nest is!
MG nests are meant to be good if you try to fight head on but you are right, they are too OP right now.
Unfortunatelly it’s mostly porblem of cooperation, the best ways to destroy MG are: flank it, snipe gunner, mortar, tank. But to do this you need teamwork.
No you just need human players. @100792986 was playing Germany so most likely faced 90% bots, as an actual human player would do something about it.
You can do all 3 of those solo if you just retreat for a second to flank, spot the target yourself to shoot it with mortar, or spawn the tank yourself.
Go try do that same thing as a Soviet player, and your MG nest will get sniped within a minute
Thanks to this video I’ve noticed that empty cases are ejected on the right of the weapon while in reality they were ejected down. And there is no empty belt on the right.
It was surprisingly hard to spot when I played.
You’re also using an MG 42 in 1941. It’s a placeholder.
Fun fact: the ships at Normandy have MG 42s sitting on top of the turrets, being the actual source of the cannon fire. Found that out by noclipping around in a promo test.
As for MGs in general- I don’t think heat needs to be incredibly realistic. It just needs to be brought to a place where it can be used as a balancing factor rather than overcomplicating it.
to be honest, before people will call me out, i’m not a huge fan of machine gun nest, but they are usefull and works like they are technically designed to.
the only thing that should be changend (aside from the wrong weapon model cuz time traveler yay.), it would be the round magazine, and change it with a belt ( including the whole system of reloading after 200 rounds. as that megazine/magazine can only hold 75 rounds )
because, from the video, we can clearly see that you correctly used the mg in burst fire, and not like rambo. in order to cooldown the barrel between each shot. this is rougly accurate, but not fictional at all. so i think that the only thing that should be changed, it would be those things mentioned above.
and in the future, it will be a bit harder to use machinegunes as more players will join, and actually know your position. this is why snipers, tanks and perhaps another mg or AT rifle are usefull as they can destroy sandbags, and generally deal against you. so on this side, it’s balanced.
but i do agree that spawncamping that way it’s too easier. and something should be done about it.
