The main problem with the NKVD’s appearance in the game is that they are dressed in winter fur-lined jackets by default on summer maps. A helper recently forwarded a topic to the developers about this. Here, I’d like to offer my suggestion for improving their appearance for summer maps.
The most distinctive detail of the NKVD’s appearance is their summer leather jacket. It’s possible just to add it.
However, this option is problematic because during World War II, the NKVD did not have a standard order summer leather jacket. And during the wartime, the NKVD uniform became more and more unified with the uniform of the regular army. Despite this, NKVD officers continued to wear various available leather jackets as a non-standart order option. Specifically, various pilot and tanker jackets lacked the distinctive markings of those branches of the military.
The most popular option is the 1934 model tanker’s leather jacket.
I also want to offer this jacket as a customization option for tankers.
A long time ago, I proposed giving summer leather jackets to the Moscow legacy assaulters squads as a customization option for Berlin and Stalingrad. For that topic I created this image using an Italian tanker jacket. I’ll leave this here just as an example.
I’d also like to suggest a blue cap as a customization option for this squad. Just like the Moscow assaulters and Berlin mortarmen.
And finally, I’d like to suggest the real NKVD insignia as the ingame squad’s insignia. The squad’s insignia in the game is very boring and absolutely ununique.
Yeah literally no complaints to be had about this.
On the insignia, its about time the game stopped the weird self censoring thing going on, like yeah, there were lots of evil and bad people in the War, we all know that, we dont need to hide to pretend that there wasnt.
The NKVD is, to put it mildly, a very controversial organization, and I am not going to justify any of its actions today.
However, it’s nowhere near the “bad guys” level of some other organizations in the game. I’m also generally not opposed to the uncensored use of any symbols from this historical period in the game. However, I’m a little uneasy about the prospect of modern fans of these organizations enjoying wearing these symbols on their in-game characters.
Honestly, the guys who justify any questionable actions of the NKVD bother me just as much.
And the NKVD is a very multifaceted law-enforcement organisation. Not every NKVD officer was involved in all that nasty stuff with grain or the gulags. The NKVD also includes the heroic border guards who bore the brunt of the initial attack in 1941, who defended the besieged Brest Fortress, and the recon teams who operated behind enemy lines.
And so, literally every single piece of clothing for the Moscow assaulters has “NKVD” written in its model name. These guys have been with us since the very start of the game.
One can also recall the squad’s description in the event post, in which the developers recounted a hundred million times how this squad was engaged in capturing enemy intruders. Apparently, this was their way of protecting themselves from calims from those who would be very reluctant to see this organization in the game.
