I had a thought that would freshen things up and keep things interesting - mix up the game modes within a single battle.
For example -
First objective could be like confrontation - both sides can attack and it must then be defended as can be counter attacked and lost. That way you don’t have a permanent attacking and defending side.
Second objective could be randomised, but only available of you hold the first. So you take the first point then plant a bomb like destruction, or a basic invasion capture or something. All the while you can only attack this objective if you still hold the first. This way 2 objectives are in play. It feels like this would reduce stalemates or stomps and bring in more tactical decisions.
3rd objective would again be randomised from the existing options - could even potentially be assault - cap and hold 2 points to win.
Winning side would be the first to complete 2 objectives - while holding the first to do so.
Effectively the attacking team is whoever holds the first objective, and can change at any time.
I think this would make for really interesting games. It could reduce those games that never get beyond one objective. It would stop the yo-yo confrontation games that revolve around one objective and just become a death match. Could even reduce the quitters and I think would be a really well balanced and competitive game mode.
Might even be a bit slower, as going gung go would just leave you open to a counter and the rug could just be pulled out from under you, making your offense futile. Would encourage more teamwork too.
It might sound complicated, but in practice I don’t think it would be. Cap, defend then await your next objective. Or… If you like to defend, sacrifice the first objective and prepare.
I know alternative game modes have varying popularity, but I think for a single objective they would all be ok - especially if you have the tactical option to leave it and defend what you have. Could even have side objectives that worked like conquest to be won and lost continually for ticket gains.
