While attending college Hillberg’s career as an engineer, machinist, and gun designer encountered an unexpected and pleasant opportunity. In 1936-37 Bob had designed and developed a new submachine gun that utilized the Colt .38 Super and actually built a working model of it at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Wold-Chamberlain Field, Minneapolis where his duties as a reserve member gave him access to the machine shop.
