In the most recent update, the devs added HMGs to gunner squads. These HMGs have greatly increased the utility of these previously somewhat unpopular squads. I think a similar overall should be explored for other unpopular squad types, such as the anti-tank squads. It may just be me, but I never use these squads because I can simply put an AT soldier in another squad and no longer need an Anti-Tank squad.
This overhaul could come in the form of more weapons for Anti-Tank squads. This would give you a reason to have a squad with more than 1 anti-tank soldier. Weapons such as the fliegerfaust (berlin axis) are more specialized and are for air targets. Having an anti-tank squad could be a swiss army knife for dealing with all kinds of different vehicles.
Or you could simply go down the same route as the devs went for the gunner squads and let the engineers of AT squads have a new buildable. Maybe a more powerful pak gun or some other anti-tank construct.
Interesting idea but I don’t think this a solution to the anti-tank squads being underused. Even if TNT is taken from all other classes, you can still easily put 1 AT soldier in all your squads and never need to even touch the AT squad itself.
It’d probably be more interesting, and easier to implement in other factions, if heavier, more powerful AT-guns were made available to AT-squad engineers. Like the 8.8 cm PaK 43, the 85 mm soviet 52-K, etc. Later campaigns could field even more powerful guns like the late war 12.8 cm PaK 44 and the soviet 100 mm BS-3.
AT-Gunner 1s could build a fixed Heavy-AT-gun and AT-Gunners 2 could build moveable more powerful Heavy-AT-guns
I do actually run some AT squads depending on campaign in Berlin I run the Volkstrum company with 3 panzerfausts given that I find T34s quite abundant on Berlin and sometimes I can’t make it to my armored squads at the start of every game
While I know it’ll be a controversial suggestion but taking explosives packs away from other classes and giving them to AT units that would greatly increase their importance on the battlefield and force other units to utilize other grenade types like frags and smokes
