Mg 08/15

HISTORY

The MG 08/15 was a German light machine gun developed during World War I as a lighter and more portable version of the heavy MG 08, itself based on the Maxim gun. Introduced in 1915, it was designed to give German infantry a machine gun that was easier to carry and operate in the trenches while maintaining significant firepower.

It fired the standard 7.92×57 mm Mauser cartridge and was fed from 250-round fabric belts (or a magazine for 100-150 rounds), allowing for sustained automatic fire. Unlike rifles with magazines, it had no detachable magazine, relying entirely on belt feeding. Its lighter weight and simpler construction made it suitable for use by a two-man crew and allowed more mobile deployment compared to the heavier MG 08.

The MG 08/15 became the standard German machine gun during the later stages of WWI, seeing widespread use on all fronts. Its design influenced later German machine guns, and its nickname, “08/15,” entered German slang to mean something ordinary or standard issue, reflecting its ubiquity among soldiers.

Even after the war, it remained in service in various forms and contributed to the evolution of light machine guns in the 20th century.

The MG 08/15 saw limited use in World War II. By that time, it was mostly obsolete compared to newer German machine guns like the MG 34 and MG 42.

It was mainly used in second-line units, training, and by reserve forces.

Some were mounted on trucks or fortifications for static defense.

Its slower rate of fire and heavier weight compared to modern machine guns made it less effective on the front lines.

Despite this, it remained in service because Germany had large stocks left from World War I, and it was still functional in situations where modern machine guns were unavailable.

There is a WW2 Variant of it but for some reason no one ever suggests that.
I’d honestly say make it a bit of a gimmick weapon by putting it in BRII or BRIII and giving it 40% sprint speed factor and the Soluthern thing where it can only be fired from prone or the bipod.

there is no german RD-44 analogue because the RD-44 fires 7.62x39, the intermediate bullet used in AK rifles

however the czechs made a prototype machine gun in 8mm kurz called the ZK423 and that would actually be an analogue to the RD-44

It is more like Assault rifle then machine gun. Maybe something like “heavy Assault rifle” but not machine gun.

What’s the difference? It’s probably even better this way, after all, there is a squad of assault engineers where there can be 6 fighters with such weapons, unlike machine gun units where there can be a maximum of only 4 machine guns.
