Matchmaking and the new player experience

equipment BR is least of problem in MM. problem is that usually you have veterans on one side that stomp newbies and shit players on other and they can do that even with br1 weapons in BR5 match…

Remember when there still was campaigns?

We saw unique camouflage squads, and they used things like mg42, g43, mp40 and other stuff. They were bots, their equipment was semi randomized.

But it was long ago, I wonder how it is nowadays.

Yes, I made a post about this the other day. The player base will not grow if they are frustrated with the game. Even myself as a veteran player gets frustrated because it’s uneven and not a proper matchmaking.

Just to lay out a few things first, even if mentioned already:

Matchmaking is SOLELY based on the highest BR you have equipped … so a single BR III vehicle or weapon makes your entire lineup BR III for matchmaking purposes.

There are two matchmaking groups:

  • BR 1, 2, and 3
  • BR 3, 4 and 5
  • Please Note BR is not the same as tier

This game has a smaller community, which limits its ability to introduce matchmaking without increasing wait times or bots within matches. Some want bots to better matchmake, others do not … however the merge did help the matter of bots not being in so many matches, however made many of us realize that many players are just worse (performance wise) than bots.

Due to the ability to select which faction you play, the game does find itself with a playerbase balance issue where there are more players playing a certain faction than others with a large difference. This does sway back and forth every month or so as new things are released and new events come out. As such, this causes many “stomping fields” where you will get full sides vs not full sides in matches, simply because there is not enough players to fill one side, so they get bots. This really hampers new players that play the underplayed side as they really get stomped hard.

There are really 4 phases of any player in any shooter:

  • New Player where you don’t know the UI, maps, mechanics, and don’t have anything unlocked
  • Establishing Players where you have gotten the hang of some of the mechanics but are still learning maps and the UI. In Enlisted, you may have 1 faction’s cycle/carousel (the 3 infantry squads) reasonably equipped.
  • Good Players where you now know the mechanics to a reasonable degree, maps are known and you understand basic areas of attack. In Enlisted, you may have a cycle/carousel reasonably equipped for all 4 factions now.
  • Veteran Players where you know the maps like the back of your hand, advanced mechanics that may not be used often are also known by you. You more than likely have multiple presets fully equipped with upgraded gear and perks in Enlisted.

New Players really need to be kept away from Veteran Players in base matchmaking where possible, only doing so, if the New Player is ACTIVELY partied up with one. The game or two that we get as newbie matches against other new players and bots is simply insufficient for what the game is. The UI is also absolutely horrendous for new players, as is the tutorials of what does what and how to do things.

Personally, I think the merge was successful, but the BR matchmaking system was not. The merge did its job in making games fill with more non - bot players and decrease wait times, especially if you played less played campaigns such as Tunisia or Stalingrad which often felt empty.

The BR system is SCREAMING to have a 3rd group implemented. BR 3 is nice because it gets you into everything, but it really imbalances things for players just starting, especially with some of the vehicles where AT weapons aren’t enough to penetrate reasonably. As such it needs to either be scrapped entirely and replaced with a better system, a 3rd group implemented (hopefully with an option that is disabled by default but allows one to be up tiered should they desire it), or remove new players from the system not for 1 - 2 games depending on performance but until they reach certain metrics of knowledge and understanding of the game. The 2 matchgroup BR system is unsustainable and has caused many to complain and many to leave due to its imbalances.

But it really imbalances things for players of BR 5, when BR 3 desert, and leave BR 5, with BR 1-3 bots.

BR5 by itself

It really feels like BR 3 is good on paper, but horrible in practice for most players. Sure, there are players that enjoy it as a challenge but an option to just allow to be up tiered could do the same.

I have no issues with the BR 3 that want a challenge, but its when they don’t like it, and quit.
it dose seems like a simple solution, with a tick option box, though

Personally, I would like to see the following:
BR 1 - 2
BR 3 - 4
BR 5

Then Have a Tick Box that is displayed atop the start button (That Defaults to Off) for up tier

  • This should be required to be turned on each session
  • It should come with a Are you sure? popup that says " Enabling this may result in you facing opponents equipped with superior weapons and vehicles, are you sure?".
  • These two should help avoid “I didn’t realize it was on” moments.

Then Add a Ticket Count for Defense: Defense get 150 Tickets to use per player (For Example)
Offense keeps 1000 as a Team + X per objective captured.

Then add a Ticket modifier cost for using lower tier equipment:

  • BR 1 Squad Uses 8 to Spawn in BR 1-2 Matches, 4 to Spawn in BR 3-4 Matches, and 2 to Spawn in BR 5 Matches
  • BR 2 Squad Uses 10 to Spawn in BR 1-2 Matches, 6 to Spawn in BR 3-4 Matches, and 4 to Spawn in BR 5 Matches
  • BR 3 Squad Uses 8 to Spawn in BR 3-4 Matches, and 6 to Spawn in BR 5 Matches
  • BR 4 Squad Uses 10 to Spawn in BR 3-4 Matches, and 8 to Spawn in BR 5 Matches
  • BR 5 Squad Uses 10 to Spawn
  • Vehicle Spawn x 2 Multiplier to Whatever the cost is for the BR above

That way there is tactical benefit to using lower stuff too, so it doesn’t feel “overlooked”

The first 10 game or so games a new player plays are filled with you and only bots and sometimes a few other players in this probationary period. Bots only have BR 1 at the BR 1-3 games stuff so it give the illusion that it is exclusively BR 1, but if you had bought a BR 3 premium you would still be put into that probationary game. No idea what happens if you do the same with a BR 4 or 5 premium, and I don’t have the money to check.

Probably the most balanced vehicle wise (I would love BR 1 by itelf at some point, but it can handle BR 2 pretty easily. I would however move back all the SMGs brought down to BR 2 back to BR 3 for this MM setup)

Even before the merge released, I believed 3 queues to the minimum. Anything less is just rough for anyone who isnt a vet. I dont see them sticking around

ppl has explained pretty well the situation about br being 1-3 and 3-5 and while i agreed that br3 shoud not face low br it what devs has chooses even if the comunityt is against it also what ppl arent mentioning is that ur 2-3 first matches are against bots only (maybe other starters players too) thats why it was just bolties

But that is exactly how it is currently. You can see your current matchmaking BR for the selected faction in the top center, above the faction icon. This BR is only affected by the highest BR equipment you have on your active squad lineup, and nothing else.

There are just two matchmaking queues right now. BR 1~3 and BR 3~5. So (talking about the matchmaking BR of your whole lineup here) BR 1 and 2 can only get into BR 1~3 matches, BR 3 can be down tiered into BR 1~3 matches or get uptiered into BR 3~5 matches, and BR 4 and 5 can only get into BR 3~5 matches.

It’s important to note that research tier and BR are two different things and are not always equal.

Don’t take even a single BR 3 equipment or you WILL get uptiered into BR 3~5 matches. As a newbie, stick to BR 2 maximum. Use assaulters and machine gunners and tanks as your main squads instead of riflemen.

Airstrikes are actually overrated and actual high-skill people don’t use them often. They take very long and give you lots of early warning, and thus can easily be avoided. Standard artillery strikes are much quicker and more efficient. Paratroopers are somewhat P2W, but they’re not too hard to deal with since they’re still soldiers that will die just as easily as ordinary ones. And if you’re attentive, you can even kill them while they’re still parachuting down and can’t shoot back or dodge.

Tanks here use a module-based damage system. The green crosshair just means you can penetrate the armor, it doesn’t guarantee damage. Learn the interior layouts of enemy tanks and shoot where it matters, such as ammo racks, engines, and crew members.

Don’t just assume that because you are good at other games, you will be good here instantly. Be humble and watch some guide videos on YouTube.

The real problem here is that the game doesn’t do a good job(or any job for them at matter) of telling new players about all of this. That’s what’s ruining the new player experience, matchmaking is only secondary to that. It’s quite a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

That isn’t the reason matchmaking is the way it is. There ARE a of people already at higher tiers cause people who played before the merge naturally kept everything they already had, and it’s been a while since the merge so people have had more than enough time to grind stuff out. It’s why you almost always get uptiered when playing as BR 3, because a lot of people are playing BR 5.

It’s the abysmal silver gain that’s designed to frustrate people into paying, and matchmaking isn’t really that “frustrating” at lower tiers if you know what you’re doing.

So far my favorite idea is rebalancing the game around a point system where each automatic costs more than bolts, extra pouches mean you can’t run all the fancy stuff kinda thing, a system where you really have to min/max your squad for a particular strategy rather than have every guy be functionally identical. But every answer has its issues.

Perhaps you should try to understand the game better before talking about it… So far your stated ‘problems’ have been more or less entirely your own fault for not understanding the game properly.
