Normandy campaign soil is easy to dig fast and deep. You can create trenches and foxholes for your squadmates at defence. It also help to put rally point in less defencible areas.
Also you can dig big pits to slow down enemy in degensive points.
If you have no choice in open grounds, you can dig deep holes and put your rally into it. Holes protects rallies far better than sandbags. Also sandbags are notiable got enemy. Holes on ground are harder.
We need it badly in all campaigns.

I agree. Campaigns like Moscow and Tunisia need it very badly.

I thought it was just me finding it harder to dig in the snow than digging in the solid ground of Normandy.
I even blamed Soviet shovels…
Valid point on the op.
If there is a reason for the difference, I’d like to know as well.
Tunisia should be easy because it’s sand, and considering it was the first campaign with it.
