Why can’t the M10/18’s commander use his weapon, the tank is litteraly open topped and especially for the M10 the tank would benefit from the close range defense of the commander’s personal gun.

Because 50.cal is better in every way.
And letting enemy to get at close range with open topped vehicle is kinda weird ngl.
But whatever, there should be always option to do it. But I would welcome option to use personal binos with those tanks more.

the .50 cal is slower than aiming your own weapon and enlisted maps are small, there is no staying away from anything unless you wanna be one of the useless gray zone camper

Complete nonsense. You can easily be 60m+ away from objective on flanks (while not being in greyzone). Especially with M10 it’s the most effective way how to play this vehicle.
Being more active is just nonsense, you have extremely slow turret speed so very often you have to move with whole vehicle + you are open topped.
I never find out personal weapons more effective than pintle mounted ones. And 50.cal is just awesome.
But I am not saying they should ignore your suggestion, it doesn’t make sense we are not able to use binos and personal weapons while using open topped vehicles.
