Lower the Premium Ho-Ri Prototype to BR4

Summary
Before anything I would like to emphasis that I am talking about the Premium Ho-Ri Prototype, NOT the one available in the tech tree (Ho-Ri Production).

I will be comparing the Ho-Ri Prototype to other current BR4 tanks, as well as giving examples of BR3 vehicles that can destroy the Ho-Ri Prototype in the event of down tiers. I have refrained from using any premium vehicles in examples of ways to combat the Ho-Ri Prototype in BR3 or 4. All stats/numbers come from either the armor inspection menu in game, or from the Enlisted Spreadsheet curated by helper Euthy. Lets Begin.

Ho-Ri Prototype Stats
The Ho-Ri Prototype sports thick front armor ranging from flat 120mm, to angled 75mm providing an effective 160mm.

Armor Images

The 105mm Experimental High Velocity cannon can penetrate up to 200mm of armor at ranges of 100m.

BR4 Tanks of Similar Stature
Here are a few examples of armor and penetration values for current BR4 vehicles. It is apparent that the US vehicles at this BR either have low armor and powerful cannon or vice versa. But not both. I’d suggest moving the 76 Jumbo down to BR4 as well, but that deserves a separate post.

Panzer IV/70(V): 120mm effective armor, 188mm of pen at 100m.
Tiger H1: 100mm effective armor, 162mm of pen at 100m.
Panther G: 95-120mm effective armor, 188mm of pen at 100m.
M4A32 Jumbo: 120-167mm effective armor, 102mm of pen at 100m.
Churchill VII: 140-150mm effective armor, 100mm of pen at 100m.
M4A1 (76)W/M4A2 (76)W: 85mm effective armor, 146mm of pen at 100m.
SU-85M: 120mm effective armor, 143mm of pen at 100m.
IS-1: 100-130mm effective armor, 143mm of pen at 100m.

Some armor values have been generalized in order to keep the post neat and to prevent spamming images of every vehicle and their different armor sections.
BR3 Vehicles Capable of Destroying Ho-Ri Proto.
The following BR3 vehicles have to capability to frontally destroy the Ho-Ri Prototype from 100m away, whether by penetration or overpressure. These will only include USSR and US tanks:

USSR — KV-2 (1939): Overpressure above the engine or underneath the hull.
USSR — T-34-57 (1943): 142mm of pen at 100m.
US — M10 GMC: 146mm of pen at 100m.
US — M4A3 (105): Overpressure above the engine or underneath the hull.

All these tanks apart from the M10 GMC are already popular BR3 tank choices.
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
While the Ho-Ri Proto. would be a challenge at BR3-4 it should be noted that all that has been discussed in this post is strictly speaking about other tanks effectiveness against the Ho-Ri Proto. The Pak gun that can be constructed in BR3-4/BR4-5 matches have no issue punching through the flat front armor. Additionally planes have always been and will continue to be an effective way to destroy most tanks in the game, and the Ho-Ri Proto is no exception.

Another thing to note is the Ho-Ri prototype has a 80mm plate of the front that protects the transmission and 2 of the crew. Most BR3 vehicles can punch through this front plate to still inflict some damage.

In conclusion from a strictly tank vs tank perspective. Lowering the Ho-Ri Prototype to BR4 would change nothing in terms of BR4/4-5 lobbies, while providing a slight challenge in BR3-4.

Ho Ri as seen in-game did not exist even as a prototype.

It was made up in 2017 for war thunder by a Reddit user.

Currently I am playing Japan BR 3 max, t9 never see such abominations on the screen.

Lowering it to BR4 would mean I’d have to see it from time to time, which is something I’d strongly dislike.

I think it’s a fine BR5 vehicle, the problem is that it has to compete with BR6 vehicles.

The Ho-Ri truly is contentious and a little confusing

I heard that the production variant is based on the wooden dummy, and the prototype is based on maybe blueprints or something

I also heard that supposedly it was supposed to have the 37mm gun in hull like the Chi-Ri. If that was true Id say they could remodel the proto

Both “production” and “prototype” are based on forged drawings which resembled the wooden dimensional mockup.

The only two proposed HoRi variants were these

I guess I’ll make a topic about the research on this.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you forgot to factor in its performance against infantry. The HE shell has 2.5kg of filler and better fragmentation than the 105 Sherman. Plus the reload is noticeably faster. Speaking of the 105 Sherman, no it cannot overpressure the Ho-Ri to a consistent enough degree to say it can kill a Ho-Ri.

Also it’s better in tank duels than most if not all BR4 tanks, the only tank that might be better is a well-angled Tiger. Not to mention that Pacific maps are difficult to flank on, nullifying part of the weakness of being a casemate.

I actually checked to see if this was a good idea awhile back and did a break down of all the stats. Ultimately the cannon holds it back from being br 4. Just too great of a he round for such a quick reload

In a perfect world this would be the TT BR5 tank for Japan and the Ho Ri Production would be the BR6 tank for Japan

I mean yeah but the unfortunate truth is tanks have much more variety in viability than all the other categories so it’s gonna feel cramped for them.

It did have some weakspot on its armor, but I don’t think it is weak enough to justify it for br4 consider the strong main gun.
And it will simply be a P2W tank if it is move to br4 consider other Japan tank on Br4.

At first, I was skeptical, but the arguments seem convincing to me.

Another post about openning Pandora’s box.
Just no, the gap between BR3 and BR4 tanks is already ridiculous enough.
It would foolish to think that we could escape further power creeping with this move. Its a domino which would look roughly like this:
Tiger I E to BR4.
IS-2 to BR4
Pershing to BR4
Tiger II (P) to BR4
Congratz you made BR3 tanks unplayable against BR4 tanks.

Just no. Not because you are wrong but because devs would clog BR6 with even more powercreep like IS-3 and Jadgtiger. There is just no escaping the pointless powercreeping.
And I honestly don’t know what to give Japan for BR5 if Ho-Ri is moved to BR6, they just don’t have any WW2 tanks whatsoever in WT left to add.

Tbf is2 could totally be br 4

famous last words before disaster.

It has the same armor as the is1 and the reload is super long and it has a weaker at round than is 21944. Not that I’m fully confident for it being br 4 but what would be the issue?
