I’d rather use a drum-mag PPD than the PPT that came with my premium squad. Why aren’t we allowed to give our premium troops a different weapon? I only wanted the squad to boost my exp gain since progression in this game is slow.

You would have to deal with the premium weapon in someway. If you put it in the armory you would have to add a modifier to it that makes it impossible to give back to anyone but a member of the squad it comes from. If you do not you have to somewhat remember that it still exists or make it the default if there is no other weapon equiped.
Any of those solution can be annoying to implement from a development perspective when they generally do not add anything to the game.
It doesn’t even have to be unusable by other soldiers. I have no idea why it would be bad if a normal assault trooper were able to use a premium SMG. The restrictions of premium squads makes them very poor, and perhaps worse than other squads since they are all over-specialized. All the ones I’ve seen only have a single class of unit, and their weapons can become outdated as you progress in the game.
And don’t speculate baselessly about the game’s programming. If the devs were too inept to set a default weapon then they certainly wouldn’t be able to program such a game. You could even let the premium units use the default rifle and then just hide the premium weapons from other units.
I did not say they were inept but any change to the current default of [empty] would take additional work. It might be as simple as changing a config file somewhere or they might have to refactor parts of the code.
Overlooking the question wether they would want to make any changes to premium squad members at all or not, having to change something that does not benefit any of your current planning is pointless. It has nothing to do with abiility but raather with the plan they laid out what to deliver when.
Bro, we’re the consumers here. I’m saying that allowing us to customize our premium squads would be good. I would maybe buy another squad if that happened. But rn they stink. Just putting that out there.

you want to level fast a premium squad its the way. making them trully usefull at getting xp for the campaign.
but! i m not a fan of changing the weapons they come with. that should stay the same,
what i might suggest as others already did in the past, is give them the ability to be atlest 7 person squad even if it is with normal tropers as squad progression.
not that i dont perform “good” enough with them as they are right now, but having more options its always a plus.
