I very rarely rant but this needs work

So, its not often I rant, but something needs to be reworked with AI pathfinding in Stalingrad. It is more noticeable on defence where my bots will refuse to go into the point and add their weight of bodies to help hold it. And further to that players that are bot players on our side get really stuck and refuse to go anywhere. That alone makes defense really hard and at times un winnable even when I am putting my all into it.

The vast majority of games I’ve lost or almost lost is due to this one issue. My poor guys will just stand outside the building getting picked off, or be stopped inside a building 50m from the objective.

Stalingrad is fun, the changes to BAs and everything else is really welcome. But the AI needs some serious love so we stand a better chance on defense.

Thank you for reading.

I don’t think I’ve seen the Ai need a pathing update as bad as this since Quarry was added to Moscow

Yes.

Typical. AI knows artillery is coming. Or I order them. To go inside a building.

So they “decide” (are programmed) to go outside, leaving their mags half empty, and are looking into the wrong direction. Then die.

My bots stare at the enemy tank to intimidate them :sunglasses:

Pathfinding is only the tip of the iceberg. AI is very basic and needs a lot of work.

We had like 2 major AI updates that I remember. In the same time there were 3 new campaigns and easily 100+ weapons, vehicles, maps and uniforms and two events (modern and space) added.
Yeah, there were also smaller updates but nothing spectacular.

I don’t know how hard it is to program AI but man, for a game that should focus on AI this is a joke.

Yeah they really should just let players who aren’t paying attention to be punished instead of auto retreating them to the edge of the strike which doesn’t even protect them lol

If only they didn’t rush Stalingrad like a mad speed addict then perhaps the pathfinding would be a lot better.

It has gotten incrementally better from when I first started playing and bots were sniping me from bushes 200m away in Normandy…that being said yes I agree they need a good month to work on the AI.
Its inability to behave in a rational way is a constant source of frustration for me. Its literally helped me lose games or objectives I could have held.

I dont mind having bot Squads in game, but they need to actually get to the point in an orderly fashion.

Hopefully that is something that can be fixed in the future.

I mean, yes they do get better. But the improvements are painfully slow in comparison to anything else.

Although, as I’ve said, I have no idea about AI so maybe it is really that hard.

Depends entirely on the underlying engine for the game and the skill of the programmer.
It can be tough if your starting from scratch on a framework that never supported AI natively.

Generally the AI needs a shit ton of work.
Its just quite puzzling when ever ppl try to justify argument X with realism / immersion. Like really, a gun reload animation / recoil / what ever is breaking your ww2 immersion while the core of the game AI functions like mentally challenged person on acid trip.

Conclusion AI is absolutely shit.

It is not only an issue with the defence, it is a general issue. I had a match where the bots were stuck in a building as attacker. So we played basically squad against lone fighter.

Tbh we should bug report said places more often when we notice them.

Honestly I think I am going to start doing that and maybe it will spark some more action.
I quit 2 matches (which is a rare thing for me) last night because I spawned , fought at the point and died, and when I swapped my solider he was 130m away with probably 2 to 3 other players bots…
Frustrating for sure.

I have lost faith in this aspect. I just don’t pay attention to it anymore, and I try to fight with whoever I start with, or with that soldier who stays alive. Because no matter what commands I give, no matter how well armed my troops are, they die faster than I would expect decent flanking, or other tactics. Just have fun watching the little white skulls appear on your squad line one after the other. Rinse and repeat the same with other squad.

On a more serious tone, I just don’t see AI soldiers becoming competitive in the near future for such serious tasks as maintaining a defense point, effectively destroying enemy techniques, or listening to commands as they need to. And it’s realizing the fact that AI has been updated way more than once.

Tbh I don’t think AI will ever become competative. At least not without becoming a terminator destroyer of the words.
But they don’t have to be even close to meta as long as interaction with AI is actually fun. Currently I’d say it’s frustrating at best.

I agree. I dont need them to be deadly, I just need them to be smart enough to survive for me to make use of them. And not be stuck in rooms, doors, purgatory , under the world, or in one REALLY strange incident, my bot climbed into a sniper tower 150m from the objective.
I logged out after that one.

I once had the weirdest incident where a bot in my friends squad mounted a machinegun nest in Normandy and just started spraying everywhere into the enemy spawn (killed like 12 guys before the nest was destroyed by a sniper). This was like 5 months ago, I still have no idea how that happened

Heh, yeah the AI can at times do Strange things.
I watched a bot pick up my det pack and hurl it at his own squad. I can only imagine the rage on the other teams side having seen that. I went from a potential 3 kills to 9.

They need work for sure.
