It should be doable. I looked into gaijins game history and they all use dagor engine. They had several flying games and now also warthunder that Have AI planes and squadrons you can give orders too.
Would make the air battle busy. I like the idea. (But only to make it busy…no more payloads)
If it were added that’d be a good thing it’ll give you the feeling like you’re an ongoing battle which is constantly raging and it should stop suicide plane in rocket spam and bomb spam.
Enriching the skies for planes would be nice, as well as polishing air combat. Idk about yall, but the planes seem so rusty compared to war thunder. Like if war thunder is the standard, this game is 70% of it for how planes feel
I personally would also like to see planes take a step back from attacking ground forces. It is goofy at best that they can indiscriminately drop bombs amongst friendly forces and get kills.
Trying a 4D chess move in order to buff planes so much that they later get super nerfed, aren’t you? XD
On a serious note:
While I’m not conceptually against AI wingmen, I’m afraid that probably the downsides would outweigh the benefits in this case.
In an ideal scenario, one or two bot planes follow the player somewhat passively, they don’t engage ground targets unless specifically ordered by the player, and automatically try to protect the player by engaging approaching airborne threats. And when the player’s plane goes down, he can switch to control one of the wingmen.
Except this would bring possible benefits, but also possibly some major problems.
Pros:
Air is more populated, better immersion/cinematic
Better chances to score XP and level up with fighter planes
Players on the ground using AAA would be more busy as well, more incentive to build and use them.
Increased air activity without draining more players off the ground.
Cons:
AI wingmen’s competence is a HUGE question mark.
1 or 2 bot wingmen per player imply double or triple payload per sortie. Imagine, in the worst case, Normandy with MULTIPLE P-47s and P-38s at once spamming rockets, while a formation of Ju188s carpet bombs the map with 250kgs and FW190s finish off survivors with 21cm candies.
Unless either Devs severely nerf payloads, which most players already rose against in the recent past, or bot wingmen don’t carry ground ordnance at, in which case a lot of players would just suicide and respawn a fresh squad once the main plane is lost.
Also, what happens when one pilot bails and the other planes in the squad are still flying? Depending on what the player switches to, the AI should manage both planes in the air and infantry on the ground, potentially at once, which necessarily requires a dedicated specific logic (unless you want your wingman to attempt to form up with your bailed pilot on the ground).
TLDR the idea itself isn’t bad, but there’s an awful lot of room for screwups.
Hurray someone somewhat taking my idea somewhat seriously.
The whole post it’s just for attacker aircraft without bombs or rockets just machine guns to take out enemy aircraft and to stop bombers and rocket planes from getting through.
love the concept, but i am horrifically curious on how much fuckup could happen with poor (any?) implementation of it. like, what serpiko basically said, but also one extra thing…
wouldn’t it causes some people malding that they don’t get to use planes because this one dude now have 3 go on the plane?
wait, how about… you can ‘permanently’ switch to a new plane whenever, and the switched out plane will fly in straight path to resupply point and then despawn, and can now be switched back in?
this would probably ease up the risk of you crashing into your bot plane, and now you can skip the boring part of flying back to resupply!
That’s not too bad and this is not really a bomber plane or killing infantry it’s just for killing planes so I don’t think it should be included as one of the regular planes maybe a special slot.
No i highly doubt it would do that. Its pretty hard to stop someone from kamikazee run you have to be somewhat lucky your positioning.
Higher likeliness. you get a little damage he drops his bombs dies and another plane spawns to do the same thing but hes likely going to be behind you.
Fighter planes and pilots are almost always useless in my opinion. Except in normandy where there is p47. But even still attack planes usually have better higher calibre guns for taking out other planes plus can provide ground support so its better to run that instead.
The only good uses for them is shooting down bombing raids for massive points and kamikazee grey zone tanks.
