A few words of explanation. Feel free to skip (unless you want to make a picky comment).
First of all: I’m not some kind of pro player, guru or streamer (or other person with too highly inflated ego). Thus concepts I listed here might not be the best or even good. Feel free to disagree and propose better ideas.
2nd: If you want to learn spots etc. look somewhere else.
3rd: I’m making this post because it seems that some people don’t know how to effectively use MGg as defensive weapons. Maybe I’ll make some things clear.
4th: I know you can use MGs like giant SMGs with great effect. But here I ignore this fact for teaching purposes.
5th: Many of those “tips” are universal and aren’t ground breaking in any way. But they are part of MG play so I decided to include them anyway.
The end of the “preface”.
Deffence
Using MG in defence is pretty much about finding a good spot to shoot from and not getting flanked.
→ How to behave.
It’s very tempting to find a good firing position and sit there until the end of times. And as such, it’s one of the worst things you can do. Siting in one place makes you an easy target for the enemy. You will be targeted by artillery, mortars, CAS, snipers and the most dangerous ones: tanks.
To avoid being an easy target, you should change position after shooting about 2-3 magazines. Even moving to the window next to you makes the enemy loose surprise advantage and gives you a chance to flee or fight back.
Of course decision of changing position or falling back depends on the situation. As Enlisted is a horde game in disguise, your spot might be simply too good for shooting hordes of enemies to leave it.
Unfortunatelly, because of the fast pace of the game, finding more than one spot might be concidered as a waste of time. Especially when lives of soldiers mean nothing, especially in deffence, so geting killed is probably prefferable to “wasting time” by finding multiple good positions.
→ How to choose a spot.
You can simply set up your gun in front of the enemy, while they charge you, but it’s a short term solution that will get you killed rather sooner than later. So I advise to avoid such tactic if you have a choice.
Ideal position (imo) should consist of those elements:
-
Your line of fire should be perpendicular to the paths of the enemy. It’s probably the single most important advice I can give.
Of course you have to be in the cover to not get shot from the side.It causes several things:
- enemies don’t have a clear line of sight to shoot you. It’s especially important in case of snipers and tanks that dan’t use their range advantage.
- it creates overlapping fields of fire and eliminates dead zones. Enemies can either hide from your fire or from fire of your allies that attacked head on (they always do).
Black rectangles are cover. Yellow dot is you. Blue dots are your allies. Red dot is the enemy. Grey linez are fields of fire. Light grey hatched area is a deadzone of your allies’ fire. -
Fire at the area between the objective and the enemies’ spawn. You will cut off enemy reinforcements and it will make it easier to acheave the overlaping fields of fire I mentioned above.
-
Hide under the roof, it’s quite obvious. Covers you from CAS, arty and mortars.
-
Find elevated positions. It gives you a better view of the battlefield and might allow you to shoot enemies that hide in some kind of hole or a crater.
In case of upper floors, it makes you harder to flank as most of the time there is only one way to get to you. -
Make sure you have allies on your back. Makes flanking you much harder.
→ How to build a spot.
Engineer is your best friend, not only because of ammo boxes.
-
First of all, mentioned ammo boxes. They are really handy as you MGs spleat lead in all directions. It’s an obvious choise.
But if you are interested in more roleplay, like a real Chad, you can use bots to get ammo. When you have <50% of your last magazine, you can order your bots to give you one full magazine. -
Sandbags. They are imo more important than ammo boxes.
They offer nice protetion against small arms and grenades and give you a reliable place to use a bipod.
If you have a choise, it’s better to use sandbags instead of bipoding on awalable surfaces like windows, ground etc. When you are placing them, move a few steps back from the edge of the cover you are behind, especially in case of windows. It acheaves a few things:
- if the enemy throws a grenade at you, it can land in front of your sandbags that will cover you from the explosion (unless you don’t manage to hide behind them in time).
- when you get downed, enemy can’t instantly finish you off. Lifes of soldiers in this game are meaningless but imo it’s better to not die than to die.
- it limits angles you can shoot at and get shot from (see the picture). So it gives you more protection. Unfortunately it might cause you to lose the target from sight before killing it.
“Normal” positioning.
“Retracted” position.
As you can see, on the 2nd picture you can shoot less enemies but also less enemies can shoot at you.
-
Rally points. Probably the most important of all buildings.
You should place it sonewhere behind you, close to the objective. This way you not only help your team to win (as rallies are the ultimate way to win) but also your allies secure your back and neutralise any enemies that want to flank you.
It’s probably the best way to secure yourself, works like a charm. -
Place mines?
They don’t work well currently. But when they will, plant some of them on your backs to not get flanked.
→ How to manage bots.
So far I acheaved the best results by ordering my bots to guard area behind me. Thanks to that they can kill possible flankers and stay relativelly safe.
You can also try to odrer your bots to fire from other windows in the building you are in. It gives you more covering fire, especially bots with MGs. But when a "revenge tank’ appears it’s preatty much the end of your squad.
I didn’t test this strategy properly yet, only a few attempts. So if you have any observations about it, please share.
Attack
Don’t go in the first row of the attack, you should go a few steps behind your allies. They will be the ones that will get shot first, and you will have time to quickly go prone, set up a gun and rain hell on the enemy.
Unfortunately you have also additional duties, not only benefits.
It’s your role to cover your allies. You are responsible for protecting your allies from flanking enemies.
Your allies are the ones that rush in with SMGs and grenades to cap the point. They might not see the enemy next to or behind them, and it’s your role to kill him.
It’s also your job to cut off the enemy reinforcements so your allies don’t have to face the endless waves of deffenders.
That’s all I guess. And as always the post is too long and maybe 10 people will read it in more than 50%
