Shortly after the Brno State Armory began producing Mauser rifles, it introduced the Vz-24 short rifle in 1924. It became the standard-issue rifle of the Czechoslovak Army and was simultaneously marketed to countries worldwide.

Some believe the Vz-24 is the highest quality of all Mauser short rifles; beyond its tight tolerances and fine craftsmanship, its steel came from the Czech Skoda steel mills, which was ranked as the best in the world. The design of the Vz-24 drew entirely from German experience in World War I and development results from the 1920s; it was an improvement based on the Mauser 1898, with nearly identical functions.

"According to the telegram instructions from the Chairman [Chiang Kai-shek], negotiations were held to purchase 20,000 to 30,000 German or Czech rifles. Investigation shows that the German rifle is valued at 55 Gold Marks, which in national currency is about 2.2 yuan cheaper than the Czech rifle. However, the Czech rifles have not yet been used by the National Army, and whether they are equal to the German rifles remains to be proven by tests from the Ordnance Department. Therefore, no order has been placed at this time, and this is submitted for your information."

— Telegram from Li Yaohuang to Chiang Kai-shek, March 12, the 23rd year of the Republic (1934).

Between the 26th and 27th years of the Republic (1937–1938), the National Government imported 99,997 Vz-24 rifles from Czechoslovakia, which corresponds with the telegram above.

Chronologically, the deliveries were not yet complete when Germany occupied Czechoslovakia; however, the Germans allowed the subsequent shipments to continue until the contract was fulfilled.

Zhang Yueting, Chief of Staff of the 29th Army, recalled that in the 25th year of the Republic (1936), Song Zheyuan purchased 10,000 Czech rifles.

Or, there’s a small chance they could have been ZH-29/32 rifles.

Considering that this weapon is listed between Mauser C96 and Browning pistols, it is most likely the Polish Wz. 35 pistol.
