A way of buffing up ai might be just to program in period unit tactics considerations
A quick engagement of the ai based upon triggers to engage in a specific manner.
For instance if there is no point of engagement and there is no command from unit leader they may engage in phase 1 movement. If they are in a zone of engagement (bullets are firing within their sight) they may move to phase 2. If there are bullets firing from a point that is within their weapon engagement range they may move to engagement. If bullets are firing near them they may move to find cover or go low or both. There is lots of informtion for small unit tactics from WWII out there for each country (some that differ a bit). I am not sure what language it was written in but if object oriented you’d think that ai interaction with stuff triggering conditional behaviours that are more period would be possible. I am not saying it will actually improve AI but you’d think it would
Here is info on the US in WWII for small unit tactical considerations.
Man, that’s some complex shit
In a perfect world, we would be able to play Enlisted a bit like RTS by commanding our squads. And good “RTS player” would have fair match against good “FPS player”.
But problem with perfect things is that they don’t exist.
Brothers in Arms did it.
Exactly, sth like that.
But sadly doing it in a multiplayer game is completely different story.
Brothers in Arms had multiplayer with the same squad system. Much smaller maps and players but that was over a decade ago.
Really? I must have missed it.
To the youtube I go!
If anyone is finding it difficult to see brothers in arms… here is some examples.
IMO if I was designing I would maybe even use a Madden football like tactical popup you know madden football or old sega football games allowed “plays” you could move this same concept into a tactical play consideration.
Here is brothers in arms… actually this looks like an improvement over Enlisted for tactical considerations but I think it could be improved more.
Still, commanding your bots goes a lot further than most would think.
That being said, you can’t do real tactics with a single squad, you need at least another player coordinating with you.
