Does wearing a helmet, as opposed to a cap or touque, provide any real in-game protection? I know the Soviet body armour does but does anything else protect or is it just for aesthetics?

No, and irl helmets couldn’t really stop bullet nor was that their purpose. They were to protect soldiers from shrapnel and debris.

Besides Germany’s assault engineers, they got snappenpazer on thier helmets.

Yes, helmets provide like -2% of damage to shots taken to that area but yes very minuscule so not even worth nothing… i’ve heard the effect on me before.
Fun fact is that german officer cap gets that reduction and japanese helmets get none at all

Officially -10% damage for all helmets and some officer caps but knowing our Devs half of them probably don’t have this effect.
You can try asking @ErikaKalkbrenner for the exact ones, probably the most knowledgeable on this

The helmet does indeed reduce 10% of the damage, but
The head is a vulnerable spot.
There is a 207% risk of injury.
So the helmet offers no protection at all in the game.
