I use it all the time in BR1 and 2 to great success. I assume 3+ the planes are too fast.
In my opinion, machine gun squads should be granted the ability to build light machine gun nests.
Right now, without event-exclusive or premium squads, most players are reluctant to bring engineer squads capable of building MG emplacements, as it means sacrificing combat performance of their main squad.
