Right now pilots have the ability to equip SMGs in primary slot, and it would make more sense (especially in German service, but it’s not like Soviets actually issued shotguns anyway) to have them have shotguns instead, considering those would be a more likely choice as survival weapons (again, especially considering that German shotgun was a literal Luftwaffe survival gun), and maybe have the SMGs as upgrades.
On the other hand getting some infantry action as a pilot is rather tricky anyway, since you have to land your plane in water and in bounds of the map, but it’d be a nice flavor thing.

why give them anything at all?
You can in fact crash-land your plane, get out, and get into the fight on the ground.
i agree. just like in real life back in the days,
( i mean for germans, i don’t know for the others nation )
the pilots, inside their cockpit they had m30s commonly used for hunting and survive. but can still work too in enlisted.
although, if i’m being honest, the pilot shouldn’t have weapons nor parachute. as their job is to remain on the plane. rather than drop behind the enemy like, make a couple of kills and get killed.
many people will argue that might be effective. but not many realize the drawback of giving pilots a weapons and survivability ( if gaven a prachute ).

now that you mention it, the biggest concern probably isn’t dropping behind the enemy, but managing to land on some otherwise-unreachable roof or other glitchy position you were never intended to reach, creating more map design issues for the devs.
I mean it would be mostly for immersive purposes
Let the german luftwaffe pilots carry their luftwaffe shottie

Looks like pilots are just a copy-paste of tankers anyway. I don’t see any other explanation behind giving them vehicle repair perks.
Crash-landing to use the pilot as a single rubbish infantryman is not something I’d be encouraging as player behavior!!
Pistols is enough IMO - having the pilot icon highlighted because he doesn’t have an SMG is a small irritant, and don’t carry anything more than a pistol.

I would love to actually be able to repair my plane
Which would then justify having a shotgun to defend oneself while repairing said plane.
even a chaika would struggle to take back off until we get real airfields
