From the battlefield: Saboteurs

Last week we announced a new class that will appear as a reward from the event that starts simultaneously with the release of the next major update - the Saboteur. The concept of the class sparked intense discussions.

You correctly noted that the concept of the saboteurs are similar to the guerrillas. This is not a coincidence: the Saboteur class is based on ideas that originally came up when we created the Guerrilla class, but for various reasons did not suit them due to their more aggressive play style, their squad containing AI soldiers and so on.

History is full of stories about lone brave individuals sneaking behind enemy lines, disguising themselves using captured equipment and assisting the main forces with intelligence or smaller sabotage actions. This is exactly what we tried to recreate in the game: if you enjoy helping your team by providing invaluable information of the enemy’s position or diverting the enemy’s attention by disrupting their rear lines without attracting too much attention to yourself, then you will like this new class.

To prevent saboteurs from affecting the flow of the battle too much, a similar restriction will apply to them as to vehicles. We also plan to add a new special squad slot in the update where you can place these new saboteurs or any other event squad.

Friend or foe

Let us explain the disguise mechanic in more detail. To disguise themselves, saboteurs need to find the body of an enemy soldier and put on their uniform, but there must be no other enemies nearby - otherwise the process of changing uniforms will be interrupted.

A disguised saboteur can blow his cover by carelessly killing an enemy, for example in front of another. Once detected, the saboteur can slip out of sight and change their uniform again to blend back in.

Is it possible to spot enemy saboteurs before they start causing trouble for your team? Yes, and not only by their behavior: there will be no triangle marker above them indicating an allied soldier. So, if in the heat of battle you notice a teammate without it, it’s worth asking yourself - is he really on your side?

See you on the battlefield, commanders. And keep an eye on your allies: maybe not everyone is who they seem to be!

in most of my games it is a miracle if a tank is marked…let alone soldiers. Can not see this being a succes.

Sometimes I start shooting at real allies before that damn marker appears.

Sounds so useless.

(I never understood why it takes that split second for it to appear. And why it even appears at all, rather than being there all the time.)

Alright, good post to explain what the actual saboteur is, but, any news about a new map? Will this update be one new class, 3 vehicles and a mag for the AVT?

Saboteurs should not have the footsteps that enemies have to help with concealment.

Seems to be the best thing in this update so far.

So they are absolutely useless and will be killed by anyone with half a brain. Gimmick class that will be forgotten after couple weeks

I am so happy that you listened to the feedback, and did absolutely nothing to change the class accordingly.

The addition of a Event squad slot is nice, but it doesn’t touch any of the issues with the class. It’s appeasement, unrelated to the subject, and only there to distract people from the actual concerns of the upcoming class.

I am happy about the new extra slot. This feature alone makes this one of the best recent updates.

10/10 service, you gotta love our devs
(that sarcasm, this is a bad idea, for Chris sake don’t add them.)
I really wise we have a dislike button for posts like these

Give them spawn delay planes have, just set timer to 20 minutes instead.

I actually love the idea.

Enlisted is such an unique game with all kind of soldier classes which are barely represented in any other game, so thats what makes it special.

I cannot wait to see them ingame!

I still think this class is completely unnecessary. Infiltrating behind enemy lines and attacking from behind is a mechanic that, in theory, should have been for paratroopers, a mechanic that was later transferred to guerrilla squads.

But oh well, I imagine some people will find it interesting and maybe even get something out of it. I just hope it doesn’t increase the spam of anti-personnel mines at engineer spawn points.

The use case for this class is for two things. Destroying spawn points and funnies. Still good use cases just very specialized.

Or 30 minutes, maybe an hour.

If they blow their cover while dressed as a soilder in a certain uniform then pick up another disguise from another body but the uniform is the same, then is their cover still blown?

That’s great, it wouldn’t be cool to see half my team with only one soldier.

Finally, better late than never.

In the first few weeks it will fool a lot of people, but then this class will become the least usable in the entire game.
