Hello.
I am aware that enlisted is in beta at the moment, and will soon be available on steam.
Therefore I would like to give my feedback about the game before it’s lauched officially.
First of all, I do think the game is great. It’s beautiful, the maps are amazing, the game modes are fun to play, no game is the same, and the IA system makes it a completely new type of fps.
However…
I have been playing for 2 weeks now, on a daily basis, and here I will list some frustrations that could cost you a lot of your player base.
- The game is complete. So complete it took me a week to understand how the basics work.
Giving 20K silver to every new player, + 20k for playing 3 games sounds like a nice kickstart, but since I was a new player, I selected " random nation" and upgraded all faction evenly, so I could play on every map with upgraded soldiers. If I knew how expensive the upgrades were, I wouldn’t have done that.
But how could I choose? All factions are unique, I want to try all of them, but 40K silver melt so fast I unlocked br1 max troopers but I can’t fill the company because it’s so expensive.
Out of random I ended up playing axis more than the rest, so I invested in that faction, and still I struggle a lot.
-
I understand this is a beta game, so this might not be relevant, and I’m hoping the steam release will improve this, but I’m currently below 30% win rate. This is extremely frustrating to queue being certain to lose.
And considering victory plays a huge part in experience gained, the grind is very hard. -
Which leads me to the next player feeling: the grind.
It is extremely frustrating to have lv1 soldiers, with lv1 weapons, facing machine guns, planes and tanks. Recently, I was bored playing only axis, because I played the same maps over and over again for 2 weeks.
So I selected allies, to see new maps.
But I spent all my silver to equip almost decently axis troops, so I was left with basic troops and no silver to equip them.
I figured the elo would understand by BR and make me face same equipements, but I couldn’t escape the pacific beach, I was getting ripped by machineguns.
The game places me in br 1-2-3.
I don’t understand how exactly this works, but if my unit with 4 riflemen, no backpacks and basic sprinfields are facing br 3 with machinegunners, it’s not really fun.
Again, I understand this is a beta stage, and you need to fill the games, and regrouping low and high br is a good way to make sure you have enough players at all times. So I’m hoping with the steam openning this won’t be a problem anymore, and an elo system combined with BR is already set up to be deployed to give the players the best experience possible.
Having a 4 squad with basic carbines, facing players with a bit larger sqad and a bit better weapons, considering he has the same elo as me, I can deal with.
Considering I made a poor choice of spawn, or a poor choice of squad, I can manage.
I’ll see it as tactic learning and map reading
But jumping on an antipersonnal mine while I don’t even have engeneers researched… then getting shredded by machine guns… I’m only playing because I hope you are aware of these situations, and the solutions are ready to be implemented at the exit of the beta.
- IA : This is the salt of the game. You command a squad of IA, give orders, that’s a huge change compared to other war sims.
I can’t imagine how hard it would be to code them. IA today are so powerful, they can turn into deus ex machina ( litteraly) in a simple click.
They need to be balanced, I understand that.
They react to noise, pings, silencers don’t trigger them, that’s quite nice thinking.
I know lately you worked on making them less stupid, but they still are. They give up your position when you try to destroy an enemy rally point commando style, or when you hide to let a tank pass and destroy it.
I would even add the list of commands is nice, but I have to face 10 players and handling my squad. To do so, I need keys on my keyboard so far away from fighting keys, it’s easier to order them to hide to have extra lives than give orders 1 by 1.
It would be nice if they had assigned positions that would fit a new player but still makes sense.
example as stay hidden from the enemies, based on your own POV, and act accordingly to their roles and equipement.
When you order a sqad to hold a house ( tunisia for instance) the one with the shotgun holds the door, the sniper goes to a window, the engeneer builds a sand bag, or ammo box, etc.
Nothing overpowered, just something that would make sense.
If I play shotgun I hold the door, if I play engineer, I build, if I play sniper I get to a window. An IA could do that
A good threshold of time reaction would be human average time reaction, so if I enter the house, I don’t face 10 IA acting like headless chickens.
Because as we speak, if I enter a house full of enemies, I just need to spot the one reacting to me, shoot him down, and by the time he moves to the Y key, I have enough time to kill half the IA, spot on which one he jumped, down him and finish the squad.
His squad didn’t hold anything, they are just sitting ducks, and I don’t feel like I won anything killing IA staring at me.
At this point the whole point of leading a squad to battle to make epic fights is just downed to hiding them, fight the real player in front of me, who is doing the same, die, take another Ia, rince and repeat. They bring nothing to the game than extra spawn.
- Silver reward :
first, I spent hours on youtube trying to find videos of experienced players, who spent hours trying to understand how the numbers are connected.
Afterwards, I logged in, played, and got 600 silver. I need to unlock soldiers for my axis squads, buy weapons for allies, upgrade them as I play them.
So in order to upgrade 1 soldier, I would need to play a full day? a full week just for 1 squad? A month for 4 squads? Then if I want to play different maps another month with basic guns facing heavy troops, getting slaughtered over and over again, just to have decent troops and finally having fun?
atm, because I’m losing so often, I unlock 6k research per game. so 10 games to get to a better gun, for 1 squad in 1 faction. And barely enough gold to equip my squad.
I have a squad with 17 points I can’t use because I can’t upgrade new weapons, another one with 14. I just don’t make enough silver to unlock, equip and play.
I could buy premium and spend hundreds of dollars to keep up, for sure, but for a game in beta making my 4 basic troopers vs mines and machine guns, it’s a pay to win.
There are many free to play out there, and I’m happy to give a bit of money to support the game.
But they are truly free to play. No free to lose and pay to win. And at this stage this is the feeling I’m having about enlisted.
I truly hope you already have plans about all of these once the game is released on steam, but for now I’m playing 1 or 2 games a day, enjoying the upsides, but after 2 games the stupid IA and matchmaking just kick me out of the game.
When you release on steam, you will have a huge cross platform community coming in.
If after a week they realize nothing is really clear, the grind is hard as hell, IA are useless, they will just go on another game.
Considering the hard work you’ve done so far, and I’m basing this on the many youtube videos I’ve seen from years ago, beautiful maps, game modes, and a new way of approaching the ww2 fps with IA flooding the battlefield with no down time, all of this will go to waste because I don’t know anyone willing to play with bots giving up your position or costing you tickets, losing vs weapons they can’t unlock for a long time, making the unlock time even longer because they lost, and having to fight and have a 3rd hand to give basic orders to IA just so they don’t die because they walk the street like tourists.
Making a free to play game and basing your business model upon premium is the right approach considering the other games available, but getting premium needs to be appealing, giving extra sqads to work with is a good idea, with special troops, specific weapons, but not overpowered.
And the battlepass is nice too.
Also consider this: in a daily login mission I can unlock 300 silver ( 300! that’s 1 grenade, wow! ) by killing enemies with semi auto rifles.
I don’t have semi auto rifles…
And I’ll finish with this : weekly rewards don’t refresh, I’ve been playing for 2 weeks, and since they don’t refresh, I don’t feel the urge to play to unlock them.
When I play valorant, I have daily quests, I need to play 3 or 4 games to progress, and weekly quests to keep me playing.
The game passes are beautiful but don’t give any advantage, so if I’m short on money or don’t want what’s in it, I can pass, but if I can support the game designers I will.
This was not a rant against you.
I took quite a bit of time to write this, hoping you consider how serious I am when I say I love what you did so far, and would love to be rewarded for playing your game instead of others.
That I also acknoledge this is still a beta and you had to compromise to improve your game.
But as a player I would like more transparency about the work in progress, more reward for being here with you, and since the steam release is soon, I assume you reckon your game is ready.
I can only speak for myself, but this was an honest feedback from 1 player, and I guess I’m not the only one, and with the mass I hope will sign up on steam, for you to have a healthy ecosystem, these are major issues that will drive players away.
And this would be a shame considering how beautiful your game is, and how implementing IA is genius. Having 100 soldiers on an open map is awesome, no down time is awesome, being able to focus on support, aggressive, sneaky sniper, commando, tanker, pilot is sooooo good, everyone can play what they want.
But IA, elo, rewards and transparency are to be adressed because I think this will make a potential must play game into a casual second zone game, a " could be good, gonna log in and see if they changed a thing. Am I eating grenade launchers and mines while I’m stuck with 3 medics I can’t afford to equip? Back to brotato" game.
I thank you for the time you took to read this, and sincerely hope you have a plan for it, or will work on these points before losing players.
I believe in the project, this is why I keep login in, and took 1h of my time writing this.
Kind regards.
