You remember why the games of old have so much nostalgia? It wasn’t just the physical aspect of it, popping in the cartridge, or flipping open the lid of your PS1 to stick a disk in and shutting it again.
It was because, technology forced developers to ship a game, and stick with it. No day 1 patches, no fenagling, no over development (which I’ll get into) - essentially, whatever state the game was released in, that was it, that was what you were getting. Some games shipped in amazing condition and stood the test of time, others didn’t, and faded into obscurity.
When it comes to art, or creating something that others can enjoy. There’s a concept known as over production, or over development, where, you spend so long trying to upgrade, and tinker with a product or piece of art to make it perfect, that you end up having the adverse affect. As the old saying goes - ‘never confuse change with progress’.
Why am I making this point? Well, I believe that Enlisted has entered this stage of over-production. I love this game, I really do, but I am under no illusion that the best days of Enlisted may be behind me.
With the introduction of the well hated UI update, and the lack of a retract. It is maybe the first solid case of the developer no longer putting their passionate fanbase first, they’re trying way too hard to perfect something that was fine as it was. Then to add to that, shadownerfs of grenades - well, it’s not a particularly nice trend.
Now, I am very early - and I mean way way early, on this, I may be jumping the gun, I may be wrong. I hope I am.
But I don’t like where this is going.
If things continue in this way, Enlisted will no longer be Enlisted. It’ll just be like every other WW2 shooter, and there are countless to choose from.
Having said that, credit where it’s due; the devs do take an active part in conversations on this forum. So there’s always room for improvement. But no matter how much you think a change should be implemented in a game, if the fans hate it - get rid of it.
Have a think back, what was a change that the devs made to this game that you thought was absolutely unnecessary? And never got taken back? What were your favourite moments in the game? Do you agree with me? Do you disagree? Is the game heading in the right direction? Or has it’s heyday indeed gone?
