Rifle pattern 98a was a variant of the German Gewehr 98 rifle, introduced into production at the Arms Factory in Radom in 1936. During the September Campaign, wz. 98a (alongside the previously produced wz. 98) were the basic armament of infantry rifle companies of the Polish Army. After the end of the campaign, some of the wz. 98a fell into German hands (they were adopted by the Wehrmacht under the designation Gewehr 299(p)), while others were used in partisan warfare.
