I started using “WIDE” formation thinking my AI wont die quicker but they still die pretty quick.
These formations wont do anything if AI is still dumb
Any tips for formations?

Well, formations at least on my observations are pretty hard to correctly utilize. But so far when I need to advance but I know (or at least suspect) there is probably going to be enemy fire I use wide formation to lower chance of them wiping entire squad at once otherwise I just use standard formation.
For obvious reasons I found no good use to close formation since it literally screams “SMG US” “SPAM US WITH GRENADES” into enemy faces.
If formations were a bit easier to select (or at least I dont know if there is hotkey for them, I just use selection wheel) they might be more useful but so far they are very limited and kinda meh for me (by which I mean that while I can somehow use them, I usually dont even need to do so and often forgetting its there)
The correct application really depends on what type of area you’re moving through.
Pick wide if you’re crossing an open field to minimize the effect of area weapons like MGs and explosives, pick tight if you’re in a built-up area and don’t want your bots getting lost as easily.
The feature looks pointless to me. And I bet developers are now like “See? We do listen to you! Now shut up about casino-like progression.”
It’s almost never a good idea to bunch up. At most it should be used by bots automatically: form up in a small set of very specific circumstances (when attacking buildings or behind cover not wide enough to spread out), otherwise spread out.
My only skill in the game or say our only sKill in the game is keeping bots out of harms way and use them as mobile respawns thats it thats the purpose of ai squads and people who say they have become intelligent or something have never might played some good game at all
no it does something it does sht …they start bunching together when they move lol entirely defeating the purpose
The feature was on the roadmap for a while, it’s not like they added it out of nowhere at a suggestion.
Yeah, the idea of quick-respawning on bots mid combat just doesn’t work. On top of that bots aren’t useful enough in combat to risk losing the quick respawn function. It may work in long range engagements, but those generally don’t happen much in Enlisted.
At close range, though? If someone was able to drop you, he’s definitely in position to quickly drop your bots as well. What’s more, respawning on them only further handicaps the player who’s already been beaten by the enemy (because of disorientation from switching perspectives). In most situations it only adds humiliation instead of giving a second chance.
I’ve said before, respawning to bots needs to be fixed.
At the very least give up a spectator cam on the bot and more time to pick them. That way you don’t get so many instances of stopping a bot mid-action and getting run over by a tank the second you spawn.
from my experience, the new formation system it’s usefull, but at the same time, they screwed up with some parameters.
i’ll talk about the good sides, and what can be used for:
Standard Formation:
Pros:
the standard formation it’s basically the default one, usefull when going around in blocks of cities, and usefull when exiting from buildings.
plus, if they are getting shot at, most of the time ( depending from your soldier skill level ) the bots will Start to cooperate with each other to retaliate back. and lastly, usefull for medium range engament.
Cons:
if ai does not throw back grenades, couple of elements of the squad might get severaly injured, and/or killed ( around 2 or 3 soldiers considering the blast damage ).
ai might not fit well when shooting through windows, or normally relocating them selves behind cover ( if not present ). meaning that they will take cover behind fences. and we all know the result.
Close Formation:
Pros:
the close formation, it’s good if you want to your AI to put them inside buildings facing windows, or behind sandbags. in order that they will most likely start to rain fire upon enemies. and if someone is reloading, the others can shoot. also usefull if you are clearing houses and go as a group in hallways. ( or avoid to getting stucked somewhere and lose the " flow " of the squad. and lastly, capture a point all together increasing the capture speed.
Cons:
grenades most likely will kill half of more elements of the squad. due being stacked up together.
and you will have less firepower as the soldiers at the back does not shoot at the front ( due to body block ).
and lastly, Wide Formation:
Pros:
the wide formation it’s exreamly good in long engagement. and unlike the standard formation, players or other bots will have difficulties to engage and kill all the units as they are a bit distant between each other. making for them hard time to engage.
a grenade might kill or wound 1/2 soldiers.
unlike the previous formation, this one it’s the best one when speaking of the " return " mechanic. as you problably are aware, the units when too far from the players, they will abandon the hold order, and rush to follow the players. when this happen, the AI will hold their triggers ( unless fired upon) and reunite with the player. as said before, this one is the best because if an MG see your squad, it will only be able to kill a couple of members of your squad. insthead of close or standard formation where a few burst might take them all out.
Cons:
AI keep mooving for no reason, making them easier to spot. but at the same time, harder to hit. i putted them in the cons section because of the next point.
ai seems not to cooperate between each other. meaning that if 2 members are shooting at the enemy, and the others 4 members does not have visual because of a house, they will just watch their comrades die insthead of get a visual, and fire back. perhaps flank on the other side of the house, or get inside.
and lastly, they tend to get stucked in almost every object.
meaning that they will " stomp " in everything they can when in cities or small houses. making lose the flow of the squad.
in conclusion, they are preatty much situational and in my opinion, preatty much usefull. not to mention, those can be combined with crouch and prone actions as the bots tends to follow the player move.
and don’t forget to use the V mark, it will make the AI look at that direction and engage on sight whoever they see. however, the players might not be pleased with too many markers in their screen thinking it’s a tank.
Thank you,
very detailed
Good job
glad to help.
unfortunally, it’s not full, because i’m still trying to understand why the ai sometimes behave differently, like, in those days i played quite a lot to study the efficency and those are mostly the conclusions.
but, as i said, it’s not clear why sometimes the AI decide to move around for no reason in the wide formation, but not on the others.
it’s a small thing, but i would like to give a proper answer.
